A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot by a deputy in an Ohio courtroom after an altercation involving the victim’s family, according to authorities.
Joseph Haynes appeared at the Franklin County court Wednesday for a hearing on a firearms charge when he was struck by a stray bullet, the Alliance Review reported.
“At some point, as the hearing was concluding, there was an altercation involving the deputy and some of the family members,” Franklin County Sheriff’s Office investigations chief Rick Minerd told the newspaper.
Authorities said the deputy, whose identity wasn’t released, was knocked to the ground and fired a shot.
Haynes was hit by the bullet and rushed to Grant Medical Center, where he died about 30 minutes later, according to ABC News.
“Anytime there’s a deputy-involved shooting where we’ve got the public involved, obviously it’s a terrible incident,” Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady told the Alliance Review. “Our hearts go out to the deputy, the family and anyone involved.”
