9-year-old commits suicide after coming out as gay to his classmates

A 9-year-old boy has committed suicide after being bullied for his sexuality, according to a Denver mom.

Jamel Myles just started fourth grade last Monday and was eager to open up to his peers after coming out as gay to his mom over the summer. “And he looked so scared when he told me. He was like, ‘Mom I’m gay,’” Leia Pierce told KDVR-TV. “And I thought he was playing, so I looked back because I was driving, and he was all curled up, so scared. And I said, ‘I still love you.’”

Hoping to get the same support from his peers, Jamel went to school ready to share. “He was gonna tell people he’s gay because he’s proud of himself,” his mom said. Unfortunately, his classmates were not as accepting as his mother; she says he experienced bullying, which led to his suicide.

Pierce found her son dead in their home Thursday and points to bullying as the cause. “Four days is all it took at school. I could just imagine what they said to him,” Pierce said. “My son told my oldest daughter the kids at school told him to kill himself. I’m just sad he didn’t come to me.”

Jamel was clearly going through a very monumental transition. Not only was he going back to school with a major admission, he was also adjusting to his newfound femininity. “’I know you buy me boy stuff because I’m a boy, but I’d rather dress like a girl,’” Jamel recently told with his mom. The stress of this all could not have been an easy burden for a child to bear.

“The combination of the child being already really stressed and making himself vulnerable to his peers was toxic,” Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist specializing in family and youth issues, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “He was proud of himself so he may have expected the kids to share in his excitement. But a lot of 9-year-olds don’t know about sexuality and don’t understand it. Sadly, he was hoping for something these other kids couldn’t deliver.”

It’s unclear what conversations Pierce had with her son about coming out to his classmates, but Greenberg urges parents to “encourage kids to talk to you about the outcome when a child is going to make themselves vulnerable.” She adds, “One thing we can learn from this terrible tragedy is to prepare your kids for an outcome that is very … difficult, and be there to listen to them afterward.”

Jamel’s mom is focused on making schools more tolerant. “We should have accountability for bullying,” Pierce told KDVR-TV. “I think the child should. Because the child knows it’s wrong. The child wouldn’t want someone to do it to them.” She also thinks the parents should be held accountable if their child is bullying “because obviously the parents are either teaching them to be like that, or they’re treating them like that,” she said.

“I’m so upset that he thought that was his option.”

  1. Oh brother!! No mention of a father on board #1. No tanning of that young boys butt when he told his mom he was gay, & I will hear no excuses of any other response whatever may come. Now the mom is on some stupid crusade to make schools more tolerant. No, these young children responded to his new found freakiness as any normal person would, they are not the freaks! Ok, and was not this mother teaching her son to be like that, a homo even if it was by not telling her son he’s a young man and will grow up to be a strong, protecting man of his family and his people. ““I’m so upset that he thought that was his option.” This response from his mom imo is so casual and matter of fact. Did this even happen?

  2. Where ever did that kid get it in his head that he was a girl?
My oldest brother was gay, long before it was “cool”. I still can’t comprehend that mindset.
I don’t ridicule it, I just can’t identify with it.

    1. My thoughts too

it just reeks of BS ..9 Y.O. and this Fked up? nahh aint buying it , His balls aint even dropped yet

  3. This is who should be called out “Maggie Parker”
Yahoo Lifestyle. The writer should be beat with a 2×4.

  4. “…..But a lot of 9-year-olds don’t know about sexuality and don’t understand it……”

And nor should they. I have to agree with previous commentators who expressed doubt that this ever even happened. There’s too much about this story that doesn’t make sense, and too much about it that serves the propaganda goals of our enemies.

The “bullying” BS is another angle being worked to end free speech. Nine year-olds don’t have a “sexuality”, and NO kid is going to kill themselves over a little verbal abuse, or “bullying”. They’re much more resilient than that.

  5. I’m saying it could certainly be true, only based on what I witness in my own life, family, community, etc. I blame the programming from the schools who get it from the Gov. We have 11 yr olds in classes for LGBT and TRANNY education. I see steering, prompting, encouraging, almost forcing kids to question their gender. I say forcing because these are required curriculum.

Yes, we scream, get your kids out of school, and do, but the programming is all-pervasive, in media and entertainment, in sports and even in so-called science/medicine.

I can’t get too personal about it here, but my eyes see it, see the confusion the children are experiencing. Wanting to fit in is so important for them. My eyes see it and weep.

    🙁

    .

  6. There’s something SERIOUSLY WRONG with that child’s cheekbones & chin.

Looks like something out of the ‘Chucky’ movie series.

    Or Jigsaw.
