Gun Owners: Be Careful if You Pass Through Maryland

A Florida concealed carry permit holder had an unpleasant run-in with a Maryland police officer while traveling through the state.

John Filippidis and his family drove from Florida to New Jersey last December for Christmas and a wedding. He knew he’d be traveling through states that aren’t gun-friendly, so he left his gun at home.

“I know the laws and I know the rules,” Filippidis said. “There are, after all, ways gun owners can travel legally with firearms through hostile states.  But I just think it’s a better idea to leave it home.”

Filippidis was followed by a Maryland cop on I-95 after passing through the Fort McHenry tunnel. He said the cop flanked him, pulled ahead of him, and then got behind them. After about ten minutes of that, the officer pulled Filippidis over.

“Ten minutes he’s behind us,” John says. “We weren’t speeding. In fact, lots of other cars were whizzing past.”

The officer was from the Transportation Authority Police. He asked Filippidis for his license and registration. Around ten minutes later, he returned and asked John to exit his vehicle.

“You own a gun,” the officer says. “Where is it?”

Filippidis told the officer his gun was at home in his safe.

Apparently the officer didn’t believe Filippidis, because he began questioning his wife, Kally, next:

“Your husband owns a gun. Where is it?”

First Kally said, “I don’t know.” Retelling it later to the Tampa Tribune, she said, “And that’s all I should have said.” Instead, attempting to be helpful, she added, “Maybe in the glove [box]. Maybe in the console. I’m scared of it. I don’t want to have anything to do with it. I might shoot right through my foot.”

That’s when things escalated. The officer confronted Filippidis:

“You’re a liar. You’re lying to me. Your family says you have it. Where is the gun? Tell me where it is and we can resolve this right now.”

Of course a gun could not be produced, since it was home in Filippidis’ safe.

This prompted the officer to call for backup, as the Tampa Tribune reports:

Kally’s failure to corroborate John’s account, the officer would tell them later, was the probable cause that allowed him to summon backup — three marked cars joined the lineup along the I-95 shoulder — and empty the Expedition of riders, luggage, Christmas gifts, laundry bags; to pat down Kally and Yianni; to explore the engine compartment and probe inside door panels; and to separate and isolate the Filippidises in the back seats of the patrol cars.

Almost two hours later, after no weapon was found, the Filippidis family was given a written warning (the offense was not noted) and the ordeal ended.

How the officer knew that Filippidis owns a gun has not been revealed. MTAP is conducting an investigation and could not comment.

  1. After the ordeal was over, he should have left the stupid spouse on the side of the road… She will get him killed some day…

  2. The Gestapo was messing with some one who was from another state. They do this a lot. Where I live in NC, they will mess with you if you are from the other part of the state. The Gestapo in this case was fishing and the wife should have keep her mouth shut. I hope the husband yelled at her for her talking to the Gestapo.

  3. Man, they are demonizing gun owners! Yes, the wife should have kept her mouth shut. But, geeze, the guns were at home, and not in the car. And how did they know he had a gun, hmmmm registration!

What is it going to take to wake people up to the fact that they are trying to take us over! Guns are at home! And it’s still a problem!

That’s it! I’m going to subject myself to GMO crap, by biting my pop tart into the shape of a gun. The crap that I’m ingesting is more dangerous than a gun itself, but hey! We need to be politically correct!

I want to scream at the insanity that is going on these days!

  4. That man was about to lose his gun , and quite possibly illegally removed of his rights to own one via that dirty ass cop that we should a know name rank SS number and home address , any wife and kids names etc
Hey , what’s fair is fair
Who is this commie , and why is he still a problem out there?
That thin blue line becomes a noose when you won’t police your own , unintended consequences like guilt by association come into play

    1. The so-called “government” has a database on every citizen, so where is the publicly accessible database on every public official? The local cop knows everything about me, so why can’t I know everything about him?

After all, it’s all about keeping us safe from the terrorists, right? So how do I know that cop isn’t working for Osama Bin Laden unless I can access his database?

  5. Here in Nevada when they run your plates it shows that you have a CCW. That’s more than likely how the cop knew he had a gun. This is the main reason I will never get a CCW. If you have it when you need it and it gets you out of being dead then it’s better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six. Another reason why I’m looking into moving to AZ.

  6. A Friend is a local town cop in Alabama. Most (and soon to be all..according to him) local and HP vehicles in the US are now equipped with a touchscreen data link to a DHS/NSA central source
which contains information on just about everything about you.

The data are cross linked to provide the contents of your entire data mine from a single input such as a license plate number, an ss number, etc, Courtesy Of your NSA

When a query is made, the system returns all known data about you on a single, scrollable screen such as whether you have a CCW, are wanted on a warrant, the names of your immediate family, known friends, (which is why passengers are also asked for ID) insurance carrier and validity, home and cell phone numbers, recent traffic cam info, recent credit card charges, and most everything else you can imagine.

Being forewarned is about all the defense we have left, but be aware, that lying to a cop is grounds for arrest, and at the very least is sufficient suspicion to search your vehicle.

NEVER TALK TO POLICE, except for a truthful yes and no and “am I free to go?” There is no reason to talk, because they already know…

The above is personal knowledge… Be safe out there….

  7. I’ve been telling people for decades the CCW is nothing more than a database to see who has them! Another way to steal your freedom! When I first contemplated getting one the deal breaker was… a claus about the DUI level automatically changing from .08 to .04. Just another way to put everyone in the system (Prison /Probation system) to futher the distruction of any rights!

  8. One of my clients was returning from Delaware passing through Jersey after weekend National Guard training with a buddy. both in uniform. Inadvertently left his pistol in the glove box. They were questioned by a blue gang member why they were resting in a parking lot and if they had any weapons. Unfortunately he put faith in a pig and is now a convicted felon for firearms trafficking! A pig is a pig is a pig. Always
