‘Humanity’ in animals

Fellowship of the Minds – by Dr. Eowyn

We humans like to think of ourselves as “like gods” who are superior to the real God’s other creations. We use the word “animal” as an insult, calling the most depraved among us “animals” when it is we “enlightened” humans who consciously and willfully lie, steal, insult, hurt, scheme, plot, plunder, and murder for profit or pleasure. Then to top it off, we use the intelligence that God gives us to justify our deeds with elaborate rationalization.

Saint Bonaventure called animals “creatures without sin” for, unlike humans, they are not born with “the mark” — fomes peccati, tinder for sin.

Saint Francis saw the “humanity” in non-human creatures. He talked to birds and animals, and even preached to them.

Take a look at these pictures. Do you not see their “humanity”? — of intelligence, loving “tolerance” of another species, parental love, unspoken friendship, and quiet companionship . . . .

And then there is their sheer, breathtaking beauty, which no human can match:

Did you know that animals have empathy? — that attribute on which human morality is founded (“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” -Matthew 7:12), but which human narcissists and psychopaths lack.

    1. Most welcome, Angel. 😀

Obviously not the type of article I generally send in, but I thought some of these photos were amazing enough to share.

      1. 😀 Glad you did.
I just got my internet back. It went totally dead on the 10th. Ended up changing providers. I have a lot of catching up to do. What did I miss in the Trenches during the last week?

        1. The usual insanity, Angel… in ever-increasing doses.

The only question I have is – N. Korea… or Syria first?

  1. Yeah I really think it is highly insulting to animals to group them with us. The animals are NOTHING like us! How not? There is a very fine but firm divide between us. That wall is the human lust for random, senseless and wanton violence. Does any animal kill another because of its fur, or the color of or even the lack of it? How about a tail? Ever see any animal kill another because the others tail was too long, too short, or the lack of???? No, only humans have that distinction. Does any animal kill another because the other looked at it cross-ways? Nope, only humans do that. Is any animal capable of self oblivion because it can build a robot to eventually replace all of its own kind…..and call it progress? Again, no. Only humans can reason themselves out of existence. They cannot give consent. They dont experiment on us to figure out what poison is the least deadly! Get a grip! There is nothing ” humane” about animals! We should be learning FROM them….not about them.

  2. Great post, #1. And yes, animals (at least the higher ones) absolutely possess some traits that are often mistakenly thought to be unique to humans: love, gratitude, forgiveness, a sense of fairness, and even altruism. Anyone interested can find reputable studies on the Web. Animals may not possess those traits to the extent we do, but then again, neither do very young human children.

At the same time, animals cannot be guilty of wrongdoing. They can do things we hate or find annoying, but they can never be morally at fault.

As living creatures with emotions and feelings, animals have the right to never be treated cruelly. That doesn’t mean we can’t take their lives — even animals kill other animals — but we should only do so for a purpose, and only in the most humane manner possible (including consideration for any orphans that may be left behind if an female animal is killed).

A man of nobility doesn’t seek to prove how “tough” he is by displaying callousness toward animals. That’s the mark of an ill-bred lowlife. Toughness is proved by resisting HUMAN opponents who can fight back with equal or even greater strength. Hunting is a very important skill, but there is nothing “tough” or “manly” about it. And as for the scum who torment animals for sadistic pleasure, those cowards should be shot in the groin.

  3. This world would truly suck without them, and I’m not sure that humanity could have even got as far as it did if they weren’t here. “The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and is in fact the most precious and valuable possession of mankind” -Theodorus Gaza
I have partly become desensitized to human suffering over the years. TV/movies/internet did that. I will never get used to someone hurting animals for pleasure. You mistreat an animal in my presence and I will rip your balls off with a vice grip 🙂

    1. No worry the New World Odor has plans to elevate nature higher than man. What that will entail I do not know but it can not be good for sure. It is very hard to achieve a happy balance in this world it is either too high or too low.
