A man was fatally shot by a Baton Rouge Police Department officer at an apartment complex in Baton Rouge Monday evening (Nov. 13), Louisiana State Police said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. at the Palms Apartments, in the 5600 block of McClleland Drive, the agency said in a news release. WAFB reported that a large crowd gathered at the scene, where the person who was shot was pronounced dead.
The Baton Rouge officer was called to the scene to escort a case worker for the Department of Children and Family Services while the case worker conducted an investigation, the statement from State Police says.
“During the course of the investigation, the escorting officer was involved in a struggle with the suspect. The suspect was shot and killed during the altercation,” the statement says.
WAFB reporter Graham Ulkins tweeted the crowd at certain points broke out in anti-police chants.

State Police has an agreement with the City of Baton Rouge to investigate officer-involved shootings of this matter, the agency said in its release. Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome issued a statement asking the community to “withhold judgment” before results of the investigation are known.
