NATO votes to deploy Patriot missiles on Turkey-Syria border

RT New

NATO foreign ministers have voted to approve Ankara’s request for Patriot missiles to be deployed on the Turkey-Syria border. Ankara requested the deployment over fears that Syria could attack with missiles and chemical weapons.

The Patriots can be used to intercept missiles and planes.

Officials from the 28-member alliance meeting in Brussels have said that the US-made missiles will be for purely defensive purposes.

“NATO’s position is clear. Any deployment would be to protect turkey. It would be purely defensive in nature. It will in no way support a no fly zone or any offensive operation,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a statement.

“I believe that the deployment of patriot missiles will serve as an effective deterrence and therefore deescalate the situation along the Syrian-Turkish border,” Rasmussen continued.

But some say the missiles won’t be used for deterrence – and that a broader agenda may be in place.

“A patriot missile is an attack weapon. It’s not a deterrent at all. Especially considering the Syrian army would never launch missiles across the border against Turkey because they know they’d be attacking a NATO ally,” Asia Times journalist Pepe Escobar told RT.

Military sources in Turkey told AFP that 300-400 foreign troops would be deployed to operate the Patriot missiles.

NATO ministers have unanimously expressed “grave concern” about reports that the Syrian regime may be considering the use of chemical weapons.

“Any such action would be completely unacceptable and a clear reach of international law,” Rasmussen said.

The NATO decision comes just one day after US President Barack Obama told Syrian President Bashar Assad not to use chemical weapons against his own people.

“I want to make it absolutely clear to Assad and those under his command, the world is watching, the use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable,” Obama said in a statement.

“If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences and you will be held accountable,” he said.

But Escobar says Obama’s statement was unnecessary and full of intimidation.

“When Obama said to the Assad government, ‘our red line is chemical weapons,’ it was intimidation. [The US] knows that even a desperate Assad government would never use chemical weapons because the response would be overwhelming. It’s the same thing with deploying patriot missiles at the border,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that while Russia recognized Turkey’s right to ask for help from its NATO allies, Moscow is “concerned that the conflict is being increasingly militarized.”

During talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Patriot missiles could not guarantee safety. He said that accumulating weapons on the border with another country does not add to stability.

Everything NATO does is for “defensive” purposes. Strange how all the nations NATO has laid waste to never attacked a NATO member state. Best defense is a good offense?

    My Fellow Americans:

Syria will NOT launch a single ANYTHING into Turkey,.. period,.. bar none.

HOWEVER,.. in the desperation to get WW3 going, and because the International Elites who are directing all this have already decided,… Syria WILL be the crucible,.. and you can depend on the CIA-Mercs (Pronounced Chia – Mercs,.. like Chia-Pet…) to launch or release Chems and blame it on the Syrians.

The play: Penetta, in Turkey just a few short months ago made a secret deal with Erdogan which is:

Turkey plays the “victm” to Syrian “civil-war” spill over,.. and “strike back” in justified retaliation,.. and they will get to keep Northen Syria, the Northern most part of Iraq,.. and get to deal with the troublesome Kurds as he “see fit”.

In addition,.. any military hardware deployed in Turkey in the run up to all out hostilies, whether “stationed”, “deployed”, “loaned” or otherwise, will become property of Turkey.

Not a bad deal for Erdogan who is an Ottoman Resurrectionist, and NEEDS the oil fileds of Northen Syria and Iraq (and a free hand to exterminate,..Errr,.. I mean “deal with” the Kurds) in order to fund his own ambitions.

Keep your eyes on where the military hardware is being built up,.. that is the Flash-Point that will conveniently suffer an cross-border “incident” that will “justify” Turkey and/or NATO’s intrusion into Syria.

The Chemical Weapons angle seems to be the gambit that will be exercised to initiate this phase of the Global-Takeover by the International Banksters and Wealthy-Elite that are part of this ploy.

My expectation is,… they may try to stage an incident during our Christmas holiday, while congress is home and Psycho-Bama is running the gov’t with no one to rein him in.

I just love all these secrets that everybody knows about.

        Hi Diggs,

Well surprisingly,.. it turns out its kind of hard to hide these types of plans when they include trying to start little things like: Initiating WW3, Partitioning Soveriegn Countries, Massacreing Tens Of Thousands, Redrawing National and International Boundaires, Sending in thousands upon thousands of Mecernaries/Death Squads, Moving whole Divisions of Military Units, Hardware and Soldiers in plain site, Moving whole Squadrons of Fighter Aircraft in plain site, Having high level trash like Penatta “suddenly” pay a personal visit to a person (Erdogan) that amounts to little more than stable boy,…..and few other “minor” events that tend to get noticed by people paying attention.

It turns out,…… these are not secrets well kept after all.

        Who could have imagined that?

what a bunch of crap. this time it won’ t work. Nato wants to bomb all of syria to stop the civilian deaths when Nato and their sponsored terrorists are the ones killing the civilians. How do we get such insane people leading the world. thats food for thought.
Now NATO will get some crazed poor terrorist to fire on turkey so they can blame syria so nato can kill more civillans. I am going back to my padded cell. It’s safer there and more sane.
