This quirky house gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘living in a cardboard box’.

Designers in Amsterdam have created kit houses made out of cardboard, which can be put up in just a day.

The Fiction Factory’s Wikkelhouse is a recyclable abode that costs just £26,617 (€30,000).

This ‘incredibly robust sandwich’ is then moulded into giant ring-like shapes by craftsmen in the factory.

These sections can then slot together to construct a house as large as the builder desires.

Bathrooms and kitchen areas can be installed for an extra fee.

The chunky strips of cardboard are topped with a waterproof coating and wood panelling to give it added reinforcement.

Currently the cardboard house is only available in certain parts of Europe. There is also a waiting list as only 20 of the shelters are produced per year to 'ensure high quality'

  1. So, these obviously are climate restricted. Wood houses in southern Florida don’t last long. Cardboard , probably 6 months to a year. The humidity wreaks havoc on wood fiber.

  2. Talk about a cardboard box. Jeez, these are beautiful. If only they came with the pristine acreage they’re pictured with.

    🙂

    .

  3. So how much is that in dollars? Heck my husband with a little help from me built and 800 plus square foot cabin house in the 1980s for about ten thousand dollars made of wood, sheet rock, plywood, corrigated metal roof, and panels and fiberglass insulation and don’t forget the double-pane windows and hard wood doors and screen doors as well. No cutting corners on the corners either (the entire house is insulated with sheet rock and that tar paper stuff)…no carboard. Why? Because rats and mice LOVE to chew on cardboard! Why pay 26,000 plus Brit fiat currency or 30,000 euros when it won’t last five years let alone a hundred when you can build what we did likely these days with the same amount of money? (and, oh yeah–many HOAs and POAs have restrictions on what kind of house you can build, size, materials, etc. So unless this really is in the woods and esp. if you have allodial title to the LAND (not property, okay?), then I wouldn’t consider doing this project. And if your area lacks mice and rats…and squirrels and chipmunks and gophers and other rodents…
