The Interior Secretary’s $222,000 Bathroom

ABC News – by Jonathan Karl

Maybe the Pentagon’s legendary $600 toilet seat was a bargain.

The personal bathroom used by the secretary of the Interior is so swanky that its renovation cost $222,000. No detail was overlooked: It has a $3,500 sub-zero refrigerator (hey, if you’re going to have a fridge in the bathroom, it might as well be a good one) and a $689 faucet. At least the “vintage tissue holder” was cheap: just $65 bucks.

The renovation was done in 2007 under President George W. Bush’s Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, but is only now coming to light, thanks to the dogged reporting by ABC News Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV, which first filed a Freedom of Information Act request on the renovation four years ago.

The renovations were the subject of an internal audit by the General Services Administration, which has responsibility for most federal government properties.

In a classic bureaucratic understatement, the audit report noted, “A number of the items incorporated into the renovation project call into question the need for luxurious materials.”

And people get mad that Saddam Hussein had a toilet seat made of gold.

Gee, I guess it doesn’t matter that thousands of people are dying of starvation each month in the U.S., due to the unemployment skyrocketing as long as the Secretary of Interior gets to stay in his $222,000 bathroom and he’s NOT EVEN THE PRESIDENT AND EVEN IF HE WAS IT STILL IS INSANE BECAUSE NO ONE IN GOVERNMENT SHOULD WASTE TAXPAYERS MONEY ON THAT KIND OF LUXURY!!!! IT’S ABSOLUTELY WRONG ON ALL LEVELS!!!

What’s a matter, Obama’s administrator can’t think about political policies without his $222,000 bathroom to take a shit in? I know I have many creative ideas come to me when I’m sitting on the toilet, but this is ridiculous!

  2. Ian says:

$22K for the bathroom refit, the other $200K was probably a backhander, via a third party, and laundered through the shithouse project.
No way, even given the extravagance, that cost $222K. Maybe a bit more digging is required to see who did the work and how it cost that much.

  3. MA says:

Gotta love that I helped pay for a bathroom that cost more than my entire house is “worth.” SMH…

    A few fair questions:

Who cleans it – and their salary.

Is there a Service Contract. I think they limited the FOI disclosure.

Is it a Pay Toilet system – Like they tried at Chicago Ohare airport. at $1.00 per usage 85 visits per day would be the same 7 years to pay back the Gold issue. That’s about 8.5 Poops per hour in a Busy Interior Secretary’s day. Spicy Food anyone!

    We are Legion…

Too bad ABC didn’t do a “dogged investigative report” of Al Gore’s homes. All of them. And do some checking into their energy usage. THAT would show everyone what a hypocrite AlGore really is. And of course, report on what his homes cost, and are worth. That would also show how hypocritical the mainstream media is.
