Why does a person need an AR15 Anyway?

This is the question CNN’s Piers Morgan keeps asking over and over again but no one gives him a satisfactory answer.

The reason for this is the question requires two distinct answers because it’s really two questions in one.

There is the “need” a person has to possess such a weapon; the desire to own one that is.

And there is the question of whether an automatic weapon is “needed” to defend oneself.

Need

Let’s consider question number one. Why does a person need an AR15 anyway?

Aside from hunters, the military, law enforcement, collectors, people who just love to pull triggers, tear up targets and feel the kick of a boom, Second Amendment patriots that believe it is their duty and right as Americans to be armed and of course criminals, for most others who buy or have guns, fear is the motivating factor — the fear of someone out there, especially a bad guy, having a bigger gun than you.

Seeing gun killings on TV or in movies, whether in the news or just entertainment, those that consider the possibility of such profound acts of violence happening to them in real life feel less threatened having weapons of equal or superior firepower to what they see is out there.

Whether the need is based on reality is not at issue. What matters is they believe in their hearts an AR15 will make them safer and therefore they need it.

Survival-Based Scenarios

There are numerous types of survival-based scenarios flaming the need for superior firepower.

Some believe a cataclysm, like a collapse of the Internet due to an anonymous cyber attack would create total chaos that would turn ordinary, law-abiding people into criminals.

People caught off guard with no stocked provisions will form mobs and ransack homes. Lawlessness will rule. An AR15 is a better defense against a mob than a handgun.

There’s the fear an X Scale solar flare will erupt when the giant-sun spot lines itself up with the earth sometime this year that will knock out everything that is moved by electricity, plunging the planet into a darkness that may take decades to end.

Then there are those that believe China will invade us to collect the money we owe them if we default and still others believe a criminal element has taken over the governments of the world, including our own, and are planning to completely subjugate the human species once and for all by disarming them and ruling with an iron fist.

So these are a few real or imaginary reasons people feel they “need” to have an AR15 rifle.

Desire

Let’s consider the second question. Why does a person need an AR15 anyway? Or, does a person need more than a handgun to protect themselves and family.

The number of assailants, the amount and type of arms they carry, the amount of bullets in the clips, the skill of the shooters, the cleanliness of the weapon, who-has-the-drop-on who, how near one is to their weapon, whether the weapons are loaded, marksmanship and ability to stay cool and aim properly under stress all come into play in answering that question.

In the realm of physics, considering all of the aforementioned factors, it boils down to a matter of how many bullets one has at their disposal and how fast they can fire them in fire-fight.

Visualizations

Let’s proceed with some visualization to better understand the dynamics of the answer

Imagine we live in a perfect gun-controlled world.

The government has gotten so efficient every single semi-automatic weapon has been taken away. Not even the criminals on the streets have them anymore.

Three bad guys decide to rob a house in a nice middle-class neighborhood where unbeknownst to them the owner happens to have a hand gun with a standard seven-round magazine, as limited by law.

Each of the bad guys has a gun. Same clip capacity and fully loaded. They break in, only to come face to face with the man shakily aiming his gun at them.

They weigh the odds and whip out their own guns.

One of the thieves pulls the trigger missing the man. The man fires off a couple of shots, hitting one thief and grazing another.

A wild fire fight ensues. The thieves discharge 20 rounds and the homeowner fires five more. The smoke clears

The homeowner, who is wounded, is crawling towards the kitchen where he keeps his extra clips hidden. Seeing the man’s gun is empty, with one last round in his own gun, the leader of the thieves calmly walks over to him.

He grabs the homeowner by the shoulder and flips him on his back

“I got one bullet left in this puppy,” he sneers, “and I saved it for you.”

He pulls the trigger and takes the man out with one last bang.

Upstairs, they hear the crying of the man’s wife and daughter. They hesitate, consider their options but luckily for the dead man’s family, they grab their wounded accomplice and run out before the police arrive.

Now, let’s assume the man protecting his home just happened to have a fully-loaded AK47 handy that the government missed in their sweeps.

Let’s replay the scene.

The bad guys scope the house and break in. They come face-to-face with the homeowner who happens to be hefting the fearsome, battle-hardened semi-automatic, casually pointing it at their mid-sections.

The thieves gawk at AK47 with the big fat banana clip. They know they are outgunned.

They smile sheepishly. They slowly put their hands up and walk backwards out of the house figuring the homeowner won’t fire unless totally necessary to avoid hassles with the cops.

They split, never to come back. In such a scenario, clearly, having a semi-automatic rifle is better than not having one.

So there it is.

People “need” to possess AR15’s for various personal reasons and desires, based on facts or fiction.  AR15’s are “needed” to repel attacks by armed-multiple assailants.

  1. What buisness is of anybodies what the F that I got be it a AR 15 or a billion dollar bank account. How about we all confiscate all of those of shore illegal acccoumts and all of those bonuses the elite had handed to them that they didn`t deserve.

    1. Good idea, Digger — who needs a million dollars? Why don’t we take all that extra cash away from millionaires?

  2. Why do we need an AR-15 anyway?

Hey, why do we need WATER? TO BREATHE AND SURVIVE!

The same reason why we need an AR-15 or a gun!

Get it through your heads people!

  3. As Mark Levin likes to say “Its the bill of rights, not the bill of needs.”

By the way, my local gun shop now has .223 and 30 round magazines.
I bought another felony count today!

  4. The AR-15 is necessary in much the same way a nuclear bomb, or an aircraft carrier are necessary. For defense and in defense of liberty against tyranny and uncivilized peoples who would seek to do harm to others for no other reason except to exact fear or to increase their greed.
A well armed militia armed well enough to match weapon for weapon against soldiers of tyranny who would seek to rob me of my liberty. That is why I have an AR-15, a shotgun, and a pistol – defense. These firearms also provide food for my family.

  5. Why do we need to justify what property we own to this foreigner? It’s our country, our property, our business.

Further, his argument is based on public safety. With over 100,000 Americans dying each year of mistakes in the medical profession, over 50,000 dying each year in vehicle accidents, some 10,000 deaths by guns ( a fraction of which are from rifles much less assault type rifles ) is not the highest public safety priority. Public safety is better served addressing the highest mortality issues first.

Finally, the deterioration of American society is the root cause of gun violence. Hiding the fact by trying to limit the ability of people who are destroyed by the system to do more than just quietly self destruct in isolation doesn’t change this fact. For a crime to occur you need 2 things: motive and opportunity. Remove the motive and you have no crime. Nobody, especially this foreigner, wants to address the underlying issues such as anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drugs, poverty, racism, and a drug culture.

Why does someone need an AR-15? Why does someone need alcohol, a drug which directly impairs the central nervous system. How many injuries and deaths are there caused by alcohol consumption? Hundreds of thousands. Yet I’m sure this foreigner has his glass of beer and jabbers on about gun control.

Send his sorry ass back to jolly old england and let him cool his heels over there. We kicked his pals out once and it appears he needs a reminder.

  6. I don’t need an AR-15. I need one of those belt-fed .50 caliber machine guns. I can really make some peace with that baby.

  7. “Survival-Based Scenarios”

    You missed the BIG ONE.

That the “government” has the intention of destroying the economy and restructuring the US into the New World Order, a one world government with no national sovereignty, with a one world currency, a one world government and a one world police/army.

If you don’t realize this is their wet dream and foremost intention, you need to wake up before it is too late.

They have built the 600+ KBR internment camps ( http://lewrockwell.com/slavo/slavo79.1.html )for those of us that refuse their tyranny, and they have made the compacts with foreign governments to put their troops on our streets to kill those of us that resist ( http://current.com/community/93855283_foreign-troops-to-confiscate-american-guns-under-un-treaty.htm ).

Never, NEVER, surrender your weapons, or you will be subjected to the same treatment that Stalin imposed on 25 million of his own people, that Mao imposed on 35 million of his own people, the hundreds of thousands of deaths that Pol Pot imposed on of his own people.

You need to stay tough and stand tall and say NO to the gun grabbers that want to disarm you to destroy you.

  8. I have a ‘BILL OF RIGHTS,’ and NOT a ‘bill of needs.’

That Bill of Rights fully protects my wants, and my needs regarding that matter of firearms, their accoutrements, and the rest of my Natural Rights from government encroachment.

I DO NOT NEED to justify to ANYONE the exercise of my RIGHTS!

So, whenever some ignoramus tosses into my face that question of ‘need,’ or ‘want,’ I turn right around and declare most vociferously, that I DO NOT NEED to justify —in any way, manner, fashion, shape, or form— anything, to anyone else, regarding the exercise of MY RIGHTS!

There is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to justify anything to anyone when Natural Rights are on the line, because you either HAVE those rights, or you do not. If you ~feel~ you need to justify, then you’re engaging in ‘making excuses,’ and playing the ‘slippery slope’ argument.

  9. While the .223 round is higher velocity and maybe causes more damage. the AK or mini-14 has more knock-down power. And yes, the AK can be relied upon to deliver thirty rounds in a few seconds. That, along with extra magazines, will take care of a whole host of problems.

  10. Reading this, it seems early on in the piece, there’s a flaw that makes me think the author is a media pundit, and maybe a psychologist, but not an avid gun person. He asks in the 4th sentence ‘And then there is the question of whether an automatic weapon is “needed” to defend oneself?’

This mis-frames the question and confuses readers, particularly non-shooters, into thinking this debate is about automatic weapons. It isn’t. And further, it’s a misnomer that Piers himself, either ignorantly or by convenient, patronizing mistake, sometimes slips in to his discourse.

Like asking “do people really need sabre-tooth tigers as pets, or should a law be passed?”. The effective
ownership of both sabre-tooth cats and automatic weapons is essentially zero.

So, probably, innocently, the fellow intends to say semi-automatic weapons, but it makes me suspect this guy isn’t a firearms person at all.

By design, An ar-15 isn’t, and will never be, an automatic weapon.
You need at least a new lower and auto-sear assembly for such things, and they are highly regulated already.

    1. “By design, An ar-15 isn’t, and will never be, an automatic weapon.
You need at least a new lower and auto-sear assembly for such things, and they are highly regulated already.”

Not true! Any thoughtful person may employ a 14 to 18 inch bootlace to turn most any semiauto rifle having an exposed bolt into a full-auto rifle in short order.
Take some time to ~think~ about it.

Disclaimer: All of my bootlaces are still virgins! 😉
