Cory Booker Proposes National License for All Gun Owners

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker is proposing that all gun owners be licensed by the federal government, a process that would include an interview and safety training.

National licensing is one of more than a dozen specific proposals in a sweeping gun control agenda the U.S. senator from New Jersey released on Monday. It’s his second policy rollout in three weeks as he tries to break through the crowded Democratic primary field.

While current gun owners and first-time buyers would be subject to the federal license requirement, a transition period would allow owners to come into compliance, according to the Booker campaign.

No such national gun license program exists. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have enacted some form of licensing or permit rules before people can buy guns, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

“I am sick and tired of hearing thoughts and prayers for the communities that have been shattered by gun violence — it is time for bold action,” Booker said in a statement.

Last month during a high-profile speech in his hometown of Newark, Booker vowed to “bring a fight” to the National Rifle Association, which opposes gun restrictions.

Booker’s gun control agenda includes universal background checks for gun buyers; the reinstitution of a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity firearm magazines; and modernization of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The plan would face a steep climb to winning approval from a Democratic House and would face even stiffer resistance in a Republican-controlled Senate, where weaker gun control measures have failed in recent years.

Booker released an environmental justice plan late last month.

Booker, who launched his presidential campaign in February, has struggled to rise from the low single digits in polls of the 21-candidate Democratic primary field, though he recently secured the 65,000 donors necessary to meet both qualifications for participation in next month’s first debate.

  1. The only gun control I’d be interested in is the glowing red dot on the bridge of his nose…and all the others on The Hill.

  3. this MORON i guess hasen’t figured out as yet, that WE THE PEOPLE DON’T GET OUR RIGHTS FROM GOVT.
    they come from GOD.
and our right to arms happens to be one of those RIGHTS, and is so stated in THE CONSTITUTION AS BEING AN UNALIENABLE RIGHT TO BE PROTECTED BY THE CONSTITUTION.

    1. Wrong, James, driving is not a privilege, it is a right. No government under the original Constitution can grant the American national any privilege. We are the authority, we are the grantors of authority as individual sovereigns. We have authority over the government, not the other way around.
This is 14th Amendment fraud. Only subjects are granted privilege. Free individual sovereign American nationals are at liberty to do anything they want as long as they do not violate the right of another in doing so. And if they do violate the right of another, it is still not the government’s f-king business. Only the individual sovereign nationals have the authority to arrest or sue one another in their private capacity. This government has no f-king authority whatsoever.
The 14th Amendment is fraud. The United States Corporation, Title 28, Definition 15, is fraud and sedition. The United States cannot be a corporation as it is a Republic. Look up Republic, Corporation, and Title 28, Definition 15, and tell me this f-king corporate government is anything but plain treason.
