WASHINGTON – While Congress readies a multi-billion dollar aid package to rebuild the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the White House announced Thursday that President Donald Trump will donate $1 million of his own money to disaster relief.
“He would like to join in the effort that a lot of the people that we’ve seen across the country do, and he’s pledging one million dollars of personal money to the fund,” said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Sanders also invited the press to offer “suggestions” on groups and organizations that are most effective in helping provide aid, suggesting that the president has yet to make definite plans on where to send the money.
Sanders said she believes the donation would come from Trump personally, rather than from his foundation of or organization. “He said he was personally going to give,” she said. “I don’t know the legal part of exactly that, but he said his personal money, so I would assume that comes directly from him.”
