An amateur witness sketch proved to be no laughing matter after authorities were able to identify a man accused of a theft last month.
Hung Phouc Nguyen was identified, in part, thanks to the sketch drawn by a witness. As a result, he has been charged in connection to a theft around 1:20 p.m. Jan. 30 at Central Market in Lancaster.
Police said that while the sketch may have appeared “cartoonish,” it and the witness’ description helped jog the memory of one investigator who recognized the physical description and the modus operandi of the suspect. That investigator passed information to the detective responsible for the theft case and a photo array was prepared.
The witness subsequently identified Nguyen in the photo array. Police checked at the last known address for Nguyen but were unable to find him.
Nguyen is charged with misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking. He has a history of theft in Dauphin and Lancaster counties, according to online court dockets.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lancaster police at 717-735-3300.
