When I went to high school in a small rural northern California town in the 60’s, the start of school was traditionally delayed for a week compared to the rest of the state so all of the (Anglo) kids could help in the prune harvest. There were only a couple of Latino kids in the whole school district. Some of the fathers (Anglo) of my friends were poor white farm hands and had been doing that work since they finished serving in WWII — but they had permanent residences and families. I worked my tail off on our own farm, and worked for other farmers every chance I got — all of us (Anglo) kids did.
Now, one of my (Anglo) friends who bought his father’s farm when his father retired, says white kids don’t work on farms anymore and will turn up their noses at $12 per hour (I was lucky to get $1.25 when I was a kid). When I asked him where the kids get their spending money now, he said “Their parents give it to them.” His son works at the gigantic Wal-Mart distribution center across the valley now.
I would be afraid to guess the percentage of Mexicans going to my old high school.
The explosion of Mexicans in California began with during Reagan’s time as governor when he introduced the “Bracero Program” to supply farms with enough cheap labor. This was after the abject failure of the “A-Team Program” which attempted to recruit enough high school white kids to bring in crops.
