  1. Back when I was young, I worked on the railroad as a track-man, installing and maintaining the roadway for passenger and freight trains. One of the projects I worked on was installing ribbon rail, a 1/4 mile piece of rail that was first bolted together until the welding crews, which I was on, could get to the joint and weld it. This is exactly how we did it, thermite in a flower pot above the joint, light it off and let it do its thing. Then, when it had cooled sufficiently, we took a 2 cycle engine powered grinder and ground the joint smooth. Amazing stuff!
