K-9 dies after being left in hot patrol car

Mason Golf Shores PDKCRA 3 News

MOBILE, Ala. —A police department in Mobile, Alabama, confirmed the death of their community relations dog, Mason.

Sgt. Jason Woodruff, of the Gulf Shores Police Department, said Mason was not used for enforcement purposes.

According to an official release by the department, On Thursday, June 18, while transitioning between duties, Mason’s handler, Corporal Josh Coleman, forgot that Mason was still in the back seat of his patrol car. “On discovering Mason’s absence Cpl. Coleman located him in the vehicle.”

Woodruff said the canine, who was in serious distress when located, was rushed to a local veterinarian’s office where treatment began. He was later was then taken to an advanced facility in Pensacola following the veterinarian’s advice.

“He was treated aggressively for his condition and there were hopeful signs that Mason was doing better Friday morning,” Woodruff said in his release. “However, Friday evening, Mason’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly. Around 11:00 p.m. on Friday night, Mason went into respiratory failure and passed away.”

While the Gulf Shores Police Department has taken sanctions against Coleman, the department and District Attorney’s office agrees there will be no criminal charges filed.

Mason was not an enforcement K-9. Enforcement K-9’s spend a good deal of time in their handler’s vehicles, so those vehicles are equipped with remote heat alarms, water bowls., and other protective measures. Because Mason’s duties did not include long periods in a vehicle, those protective measures were not available in his handler’s car.

  1. 1st degree murder of a peace officer. Oh the outrage.

3 of the 6 dead k9s in the us this year got forgot in hot cars by a cop. Good thing they dont use babies!

  2. ” Mason’s handler, Corporal Josh Coleman, forgot that Mason was still in the back seat of his patrol car ”

Forgot ? WTF ??? Hummm, let’s see, felony animal neglect, cruelty, and murder. But the bastard will get a nice ” paid leave ” vacation and probably a promotion to Animal Control. I would lock the Corporal Josh Coleman, handcuffed, blindfolded, and gagged in a 3’x3′ 1/4′ steel box and put it into a paint drying oven. An eye for an eye.

” While the Gulf Shores Police Department has taken sanctions against Coleman, the department and District Attorney’s office agrees there will be no criminal charges filed. ”

Sanctions ? I call B.S. If you or I did the same, we’d probably get a swat team and a bullet to the head . . .

  3. So the police officer was not charged with 1st Degree murder of a fellow police officer? But if you or I did this, we’d have the animal rights groups on our ass and charged with murder. I see how it is. I’m sick of this disgusting display of hypocrisy and how the MSM is blatantly complicit in it, when they know better.

  4. what an idiot

here is how i saw some of our (finest) solve this problem

Hood of cop car, truck etc. is left open,, car is left running / locked / ac on .. all is fine. fuel not an issue the tax payer foots the bill, wont hurt the vehicle if its in good working order

if these dumb cops around here figured it out whats this guys excuse?
