A central Kentucky police officer who was shot while investigating an armed robbery has died from his injuries, the Kentucky State Police said on Friday.

Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis, 33, was shot Wednesday morning by a man while he and another officer were searching an apartment in a town about 25 miles (40 km) south of Lexington.

The other officer returned fire and wounded the suspect, identified as Raleigh Sizemore. Sizemore was treated for his injuries and arrested, police said.

Ellis died early Friday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, where he had been taken after the shooting, police said. He had been with the department seven years.

Sizemore, 34, had been charged with attempted murder of a police officer and unlawful imprisonment after the shooting. He was being held at the Kentucky State Reformatory in LaGrange, Kentucky corrections spokesman Mike Caudill said.

Ellis was shot in the apartment of Gregory Ratliff, 25, who was charged with complicity to commit murder of a police officer, authorities said. Ratliff was being held in the Madison County jail.

  1. “Ellis died early Friday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington,…”

OUTSTANDING!!! Best story of the day!!! (unless another one bites the dust before it’s over).

  2. like history, depends on who’s telling the story. i dont know if it did or didnt happen this way. all i do know is i believe nothing in print anymore. for all we know this cop could have been ambushed by his own. and for all we know the guy was defending himself and took one down with him and lived…for now. and the guys who’s apartment it was is being held on same charges. its always the same ole script. if their not trying to go on paid vacation, their begging for funding. what could go wrong with a set up like this. exactly what we got.

  3. News like this never fails to brighten my day, especially before a weekend. The only thing that could make it better would be the shooters getting away with it.

Let this one be for that innocent handyman who was shot in the head by the LAPD pigs (reported earlier today on this site).

  4. Always good to her about a cop getting what he deserves, but I have to wonder if we would have heard about this years ago, or if Reuters is pushing the “war on cops” myth, and will now make sure we hear about every cop who’s injured on the job.
