Man killed by homeowner after alleged sexual assault identified

One less career criminal.

Kansas City Star – by CHRISTINE VENDEL

A woman in her late 60s told Kansas City police she shot and killed an intruder who sexually assaulted her early Thursday.

Officers responding to the shooting call about 1:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of East 68th Street found a man’s body in the home. Police later identified him as Paul J. Williams, 24, of Kansas City.

Detectives questioned the woman and collected evidence Thursday morning.

She told police she heard a knock on her door and opened it. A man asked for someone who didn’t live there before pushing his way inside, she said. He forced the woman into a bedroom, where he reportedly assaulted her. Afterward, he walked into the kitchen.

The woman fetched her revolver and walked out of her bedroom, police said. When the man came at her again, she shot him once. He collapsed.

A neighbor heard the gunshot and saw the woman walk out of her home and ask for help.

Police released the woman from custody Thursday afternoon.

Williams’ death was counted as the city’s 94th homicide of the year. The classification of homicide applies to all deaths caused by the hand of another person.

Williams was released from prison last year for one burglary and two robbery convictions stemming from a 2006 incident in Kansas City. He was 17 when prosecutors accused him of using a tire iron in a home invasion robbery that netted $400 and two laptop computers.
