This is a good weapon. It runs about 550/600 dollars. Whereas the Henry runs 900. The difference being the Henry is made in America and the Rossi in Brazil. But it is 300 less. You can get a lot of rounds for 300.00. They also make it in a .38/.357. So if you already own a .38, you wont have to acquire another caliber.
Interesting little critter, would love to try one but as stated is a bit of a novelty item and wallet says NO!Wallet telling me the optics am looking for are going to thin it out enuff, still, fun looking little item.
Yeah, I agree. I would be a lot of fun to own and probably could do it’s job and I really WANT one, but like I was told growing up, “want in one hand a crap in the other, see which one fills up first”. 🙂
Well,if the choice was the Rossi or crap in my hand, hmmmm….,guess I own a Rossi!
The rossi is a great gun. I know this because I have the standard rifle in .45 lc. I swear it has eyes as it hits everything it is pointed at. Don’t be fooled because it’s made in Brazil, it’s one tough bugger.
I was hoping you would come on about this gun. You are the resident expert lever gun guy. 🙂 Joe was asking about a good lever gun last night on my program and I was mentioning the Henry. Found this one today.
Do you think the Henry is worth the cash? THey are pretty high.
I don’t know about being an expert but I do shoot almost all levers so I’ve had experience with them.
Henry are some of the best rifles in levers made, hence the price. There was a lot of guys in SASS that wouldn’t shoot anything else. I didn’t have the money at the time so I got the Rossi and I haven’t regretted it. Winchester had some problems with their levers at one time but I think they got it worked out. Marlin also builds a real good rifle in 30/30, 45/70 and 444 as well as pistol calibers. Also henry builds these but the regular rifle when i bought mine was $265.00. when they have to cut them down they cost more and remember they hold the same ammount of rounds as a pistol.
Do you recommend the 45/70? I looks like a beast of a round. If I get one I will of course want to reload it. I am guessing it eats a lot of powder.
I want the Mare’s Leg, but the rifle would actually make more sense. I will probably wait on the Mare’s Leg until I am filthy rich and have all other weapon that I want. (I guess I wont be getting one) 🙂
I like the 45/70 because there isn’t anything it won’t take down. It is a versatile round to reload as you can use 300 grn to 450 grn bullets in them. For hunting the copper jacketed round nose flat point is a good hunting round and can be loaded from (I think) 1200fps to 3000fps. I like the .405 grn lead round and 1986fps. the recoil is mild for that round also. My next one is a co-pilot 45/70 from Wild West Guns in Alaska. That’s if I can sell my soul to get it.
Thanks REDHORSE,
I just looked at the Rossi 45/70, 20″ barrel. I am starting to drool. 625.00.
I was wrong about the fps on those rounds. It’s around 2030 for a 350grn and 14-1500 for a .405. Sorry for the mistake but thats why you ALWAYS refer to the loading chart.
I was looking at my book as well. Hornady used to put data for a 500 gr for that round. They said they quit because of “shooter fatigue” Yeah I bet.
🙂
