In the aftermath of Ariel Sharon’s death, we take a look at his troubling legacy. We return to the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which many hold Sharon responsible for, despite his never facing trial.

“I have nightmares most nights… I’ve been trying to forget.” It was one of the most horrendous massacres of the 20th Century; the mass murder of unarmed men, women and children in Beirut’s Palestinian camps. The painful and psychologically scarring memories of the massacres have been compounded by the failure to bring anyone to justice. In particular Ariel Sharon, who as Israeli Minister of Defence oversaw the attacks. An Israeli state enquiry said that Sharon bore “personal responsibility”, and yet he stayed in the cabinet.
