Abandoned dog to be reunited with owners

An elderly couple will reunite with their 13-year-old Dachshund, named Otto Wolfgang Maximus, after thinking he was too sick for them to care for. Otto’s owners could not afford a trip to the vet, nor could they stand to see their beloved dog in pain. The couple brought Otto to the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter in Baldwin Park, Calif., on March 6. They attached a note asking that Otto be “put to sleep.”

“We are both seniors, sick with no money,” the note said. “We cannot pay for vet bills, or to put him to sleep. He has never been away from us in all those years, he cannot function without us, please put him to sleep.”

The staff at the shelter recognized that Otto was not as sick as his owners believed. Instead of euthanizing him, they contacted No Paws Left Behind, a non-profit organization whose stated mission is, in part, to “save adoptable animals from Kern County shelters who are in danger of being euthanized simply because of overcrowded facilities.”

No Paws Left Behind’s CEO, Toby Wisneski, tracked down Otto’s owners and offered to pay for all of the dog’s medical needs for the rest of his life.

“We thought he was dead, but he lives,” said Otto’s owner. “He’s being well taken care of and, boy, we’re just so extremely grateful.”

  1. Yes it is good to know that somehow they tracked down Otto`s owners. That is really cool.
Great news for today Angel. That was good for both Otto and Ottos owners to be reunited. 🙂 🙂 🙂
