Amtrak Train Involved in Waverly, VA Crash

State Police are investigating a crash involving a vehicle and an Amtrak train in Waverly.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said the crash occurred on Route 40 around 6 a.m. Anaya did not say if the train struck the vehicle or vice versa.  

Christina Leeds with Amtrak told WAVY.com Northeast Regional train 174 was involved in the crash. The train was operating from Norfolk to Boston and had 46 passengers on board. Leeds said there were no reported injuries to passengers and no damage to the train.

According to Amtrak’s website, the train left Norfolk at 5 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Boston at 6:30 p.m. The train will be able to continue on its route when released by officials, Leeds said.

Anaya said LifeFlight was called to the scene, but the extent of injuries at this time is unknown.
