Homeowners Association: Veteran Can’t Build Furniture For Military Families In Need

CBS Sacramento

A war veteran who builds furniture in his garage and gives it to militaryfamilies in need could be forced to shut down the saws.

A homeowners association is telling Dennis Kocher he needs to close up shop after years of doingbusiness, or he could be fined between $100 and $1,000.

“I may not paint, sand, cut wood or screw on theproperty at anytime,” he said.

The new mandate cuts deep, as he’s been building cabinets and dressers for a decade, donating most to military families.

“Everyone who received my furniture or responsible for dispersing it gave me this gift and it’s something I’ll treasure forever,” he said holding a photo.

He builds to help make a better life for families who have very little.

“I don’t make a profit. The money I spend is my own money, my own time and talents and I build it to give to the Beale [Air Force Base],” he said.

Even as a nonprofit, the Vietnam veteran was told he had to get a business permit, which he did in 2012. But this March, the Lake of the Pines Homeowners Association took it away.

“Now they’ve come back to me and said I’m producing odors and noxious fumes,” he said.

Such complaints typically come from neighbors, but those who live nearby have written letters supporting Dennis Kocher and his work.

We tried getting answers from the association’s general manager, but he would not comment.

Kocher has stopped building for now, but he vows it won’t stay that way for long.

“I’m going to keep that fighting spirit,” he said. “I don’t give up.”

He plans to appeal his case to the board at an Aug. 5 meeting. He will have some company, as the senior master sergeant from Beale has also promised to be there.

  1. I lived under one of these Homeowners Associations once, but not for long.
Talk about Agenda 21. They had a rule for everything.

  2. this is why i have not and will not ever live in an apartment or other housing complex where there is a home owners association.. and the first moron to come to my door and tell me what i can and can’t do on my own property will be buried on said property..

everyone should have this attitude, and if they did there would be none of the BS where they take your car if it isn’t in a garage or fine you for grass over 2in tall.. and if people got together and popped these morons then there would be no property taken for not paying the tax to king George III.. but what do people do? bicker and whine at each other and fight over a dam ball game..

im like i bought the property, is it not mine? you would think it was yours, you got the deed or title.. but if they can take it because you do not pay a tax, do you really own it?

but these home owners association figures run these things like 3rd world dictatorships.. they got a little power and will abuse that power… and most are very anti American or anti Veteran socialist scum..

i like the wasp or hornets mind set myself.and this is how people should be. it would stop a lot of crap… ya can be in the vicinity of their nest.. you can work or do other things around the area.. but if you come and touch the nest then you have every one of them on your ass.. but as i said b4, Americans are more divided than the waters by the land..

people just do not care what happens to their fellow man anymore.. as long as they get what they want and it does not effect them then they do not care.. even if it does effect them it seams they do not care.. it is like everyone has lot their will to be free.. talk about slave mentality..

  3. I would never join one of those mini-dictatorship home owners associations. Truth is, however we really own nothing. Either the banks(mortgages, loans) or the tax collectors do.

  4. The more I hear about these “homeowner associations” the more I’m convinced they’re working hand in hand with the commies.

At first they sounded to me like a bunch of bored old ladies pushing people around because they have nothing to do with their time, and they enjoy their petty little taste of power over other people, but now I have to wonder if there’s not a more sinister, and hidden motivator behind their actions.

Did you try poison in the board room coffee pot? That might change a few rulings.
