Los Angeles covers reservoir waters with ‘shade balls’

Does anyone else picture these things being used to put biological agents in the water supply?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles has been blackballed.

The city has completed a program of covering open-air reservoirs with floating “shade balls” to protect water quality. City officials this week dumped the last 20,000 of 96 million black balls into the Los Angeles Reservoir in Sylmar, 25 miles northwest of downtown.

The 4-inch-diameter plastic balls block sunlight from penetrating the 175-acre surface of the reservoir. That prevents chemical reactions that can cause algae blooms and other problems, allowing the Department of Water and Power to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water-quality requirements.

They have the added perk of aiding with the ravages of the drought, and are expected to keep about 300 million gallons annually from evaporating. “In the midst of California’s historic drought, it takes bold ingenuity to maximize my goals for water conservation,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement, noting that the effort is “emblematic of the kind of the creative thinking we need to meet those challenges.”

The 36-cent balls also will help prevent evaporation of 300 million gallons of water annually from the 3.3 billion-gallon reservoir, the DWP said. The city began using shade balls in 2008, and they now also cover the Upper Stone, Elysian and Ivanhoe reservoirs.

  1. I’m no genius, but if the balls are black, then they absorb heat. Heat will cause the water to heat up causing faster bacteria growth. This bacteria growth without sunlight can cause a nasty form of deadly bacteria that may not be able to be filtered out during processing. If I’m way off here someone let me know.

    1. I think you’re right, REDHORSE. Sunlight is a great disinfectant, which this reservoir is now deprived of.

They’ll find this out the hard way, and then pour chemical disinfectants into the drinking water to hide their stupidity.

    2. REDHORSE is correct in that these black balls will heat up, and that heat will be transferred into the water through physical contact. What
type of plastic is being used, and can chemicals in this plastic leach out into the water? This is a question that must be asked.

    1. Actually that is not correct. Just like any other green plant, Algae requires sunlight for photosynthesis unless it has some other energy source such and phosphates or nitrates.

I would seriously hope that these reservoirs are not that rich in either of the later substances.

  2. REDHORSE is right.

Black balls will heat the water faster and hotter….
it will not cool anything down…
blocking the sunlight is guaranteed bacterial growth….
Sounds like it was planned this way, but they assume PEOPLE won’t get it.

The water is no longer safe.

    bold ingenuity…what a joke.

  3. Commiefornia keeps having more and more great Commie ideas.

Yea, instead of getting rid of HAARP, let’s build some balls to stop the sun from drying out the water. And let’s destroy that idea by making the balls black in order to absorb the heat which will in turn, heat up the water and cause it to dry out even faster.

Reminds me of my wife’s Commie District Manager at Panda Express Restaurant, who told her and the rest of the General Managers,

“We give you paid time off. That means if you can’t get things done, we give you time on your day off to go in and help out your store and the company, so why don’t you all do it?”

Yea, a real Pelosi moment there. Makes perfect Communist sense.

My jaw just dropped after hearing that and I just wanted to slap her manager myself. Apparently to Commies, a day off means you work. Go figure. 🙄

  4. What if somehow they end up in the oceans? More garbage to add to the already huge garbage patch out there. I’d say “what are they thinking” but they’re not.
