LOS ANGELES – An assault with a deadly weapon suspect was shot andkilled by officers at the end of a 1-hour 15-minute-plus car chase in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles, where the suspect fired at least four shotgun blasts at police during the pursuit, a police sergeant said today.
A police gang unit spotted about the suspect about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in a small pick up truck with a camper shell in the area of Broadway and Griffith Avenue, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Media Relations Section.
The suspect was the last remaining of three suspects not in custody for an Oct. 30 attack that involved a knife, shotgun and BB gun, Preciado said.
The police gang unit saw the suspect at Griffith Avenue and Broadway, tried to pull him over. The first officer-involved shooting occurred, where the suspect reportedly fired shots at officers and drove away, the police sergeant said.
During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly fired at officers in the area of 31st Street and Griffith Avenue and they, in return, fired at him. The suspect fired at the police a third time during the chase, in the area of Avenue 26, east of the Pasadena (110) Freeway and officers returned fire, he said.
A fourth and final officer-involved shooting occurred at Huron Street, south of Cypress Avenue, where the suspect was going north Huron Street, Preciado said.
Police said officers were able to stop the pickup truck with a PIT
maneuver.
Preciado said the suspect pointed the shotgun at the officers, who shot him dead at the scene.
