It is a classical Permaculture technique. Sheet mulching. If you are dealing with weeds and grass underneath, that may try and poke through as the cardboard rots, use a heavy spray of some high nitrogen fertilizer before laying the cardboard down. This will cause the weeds/grass (same thing in a garden really) to grow up into the darkness and then they in turn become compost. Cheerio!
