NYPD detectives union wants to sue those who violate coronavirus social distancing rules

New York Daily News

The union representing NYPD detectives wants to sue anyone who puts their members at risk of catching coronavirus by violating social distancing rules, the group said Tuesday.

“To unnecessarily put our people in harm’s way, it’s unacceptable,” Detectives’ Endowment Association President Paul DiGiacomo said. “We’re not out there to be abused and treated like second-class citizens.”

DiGiacomo said his union is “exploring the avenues of legal action” against people whose flagrant violation of social distancing rules results in a detective getting sick or dying from coronavirus.

“If it’s not going to be addressed by the politicians, then this union is going to address it in any way that we can,” he said.

The NYPD declined to comment when contacted about the DEA’s announcement.

A recent viral video showing people congregating in Brooklyn on April 16 without masks and refusing police demands to disband demonstrates how reckless people have been during the pandemic, DiGiacomo said.

In a similar incident Saturday night in Brooklyn, two people were arrested and 60 summonses were given out when cops found dozens of people partying in a Canarsie barber shop.

And at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, cops in the Bronx busted up an underground bottle club for breaking coronavirus social distancing rules. Two people were arrested and eight others were summonsed for not social distancing, officials said.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday that 31 NYPD members have so far died from COVID-19 since the outbreak began. An additional 4,981 uniformed members were out sick, which accounts for nearly 14% of uniformed officers.
