“If history is deprived of the Truth, we are left with nothing but an idle, unprofitable tale.”
“Monarchy degenerates into tyranny, aristocracy into oligarchy, and democracy into savage violence and chaos.”
“Nor ought we ever to allow any growing power to acquire such a degree of strength as to be able to tear from us, without resistance, our natural, undisputed rights.”
“Knowing how to win is the first step. We must also know how to make use of our victories.”
“When the ancients said a work well begun was half done, they meant to impress the importance of always endeavoring to make a good beginning.”
“The glorious memory of brave men is continually renewed; the fame of those who have performed any noble deed is never allowed to die; and the renown of those who have done good service to their country becomes a matter of common knowledge to the multitude, and part of the heritage of posterity.”
“There is no witness so dreadful, no accuser so terrible as the conscience that dwells in the heart of every man.”
I have one for ya galen…….The burden of Truth is not the knowledge of it but the dissemination of it
Good one, Mary.
Thanks, Mary. Excellent! We do what we can, eh? I’ll tell you one thing, I “disseminate” a lot more since I stumbled into The Trench.
🙂
It was Polybius mentioning “our natural, undisputed rights” that drew me toward these quotes from over two millennia ago. I saw that they could have been spoken today with as much relevance, and it became glaringly clear to me we’ve been up against the corruption for so very, very long.
.
Dissemination of truth…in every literary work of fiction is the knowledge that much fiction is based on true events, and (having read so much non-fiction that really is truly fiction!) that alone explains why I write fiction novels–tell the truth and have an interesting time doing it. If I do write non-fiction it’s because I’m writing about something that actually happened and I witnessed (for instance, the Republic of Texas movement and standoff…coming within the next few years).
