Russian Su-24 fighter jet shot down over Syria – Russian MoD

A Russian Su-24 fighter has been shot down in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding the plane hadn’t violated Turkish airspace and was flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters.

“During the flight, the aircraft was flying within the borders of Syria, which was registered by objective monitoring data,” the ministry said, adding that the aircraft was “supposedly shot down from the ground.”  

The pilots managed to eject, the ministry said, adding their fate is as yet unknown.

The downing of the Russian plane is “a very serious incident,” said Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He added, however, that it is too early to draw conclusions until the whole situation is clear.

Footage has emerged online, allegedly showing Russian pilots from the downed jet immobile on the ground and surrounded by locals. Some reports claim that one pilot is dead.

Reports of a downed plane emerged earlier in Turkish media. A Habertürk TV reporter on the scene said the aircraft “turned into a fireball.” Numerous witnesses wrote on social media, saying thick plumes of smoke have been rising from the jet crash site.

Turkish military added the plane had been warned at least 10 times over a period of five minutes before being shot down by two Turkish F-16 fighter jets. He said the plane had violated Turkish airspace.

The plane reportedly crashed in a village mostly populated by Syrian Turkmen. The place has been a hotspot between the opposition and the Syrian Army.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has met with officials from the Foreign Ministry. He instructed them to consult with NATO and the UN on the latest developments on the Syrian border, Davutoglu’s office said in a statement.

      BTW, The little turkey, trying to be the bait for NATO to kill a bear might be a tad bit in over its head. Then again, it is almost, Thanksgiving, and Putin might carve it up. What is NATO going to do? Fight on behalf of Erdogan a Global Thermo Nuclear war for a couple of Turks that want to rule over what Eretz Israel don’t want and call it the Ottoman Empire Redux? It is obvious that Erdogan doesn’t care about his own population roasting on a Thermo Nuclear Fire.

  3. The SU-24 is like our F111 ARDVARK. 2 F16 vs SU-24 is the equivalent of rolling a drunk in the street. Russian bomber never had a chance. Hopefully next time they have some M29 or Su-27 in tow when they make their runs. It was a “MICKEY MOUSE KILL”. Meanwhile turkish butchers are murdering Kurdish in their ongoing genocide campaign. Turkey has always been harboring ISIS. We know that for a fact. If the Russian air force is going after targets in Turkey its a good bet that there is a good reason for that.

      Don’t you think that that bomber wouldn’t have had the cover of Fighters and capable of taking care of anything Turkey would counter an/the attack with.

      Why is there still the thought that Russians are dumb asses that know nothing, have no tactics to speak off or consider and are always seen as the underdog in spite of never underestimating ANY potential Enemy according to Sun Tsu.

      This is the second time (Last time it was a Syrian jet, IIRC) that Turkey/NATO tries to start the big one on behalf of some biblical wishes of some non believers that act like they are our biggest friends while making sure they have the finger on the button of our latest fashioned explosive neckband and dictating by proxy and pac our policy.

      And yes the hypocrisy of western controlled governments goes without limits. We attack any government that supports according to our claims terrorists. After all who needs proof of the counter argument, if you are either with them or with us…

  4. Didn’t Turkey move their border 5 miles or kilometers further into Syria?
    The Russians are not foolish enough to fly into Turkish air space.
