McCOOK – Rio Grande Valley ranchers said their homes and camps are being targeted by thieves looking for guns.
Half a dozen people who own ranch land in the McCook area said they were victims of these break-ins or knew someone burglarized.
McCook rancher Jack Scoggins was informed yesterday someone used bolt cutters to cut the lock on his gate. The person gained access to his property, but fortunately nothing was taken.
Scoggins said thieves have entered numerous properties with trailers and hunting camps looking for firearms. Other expensive items were left behind, but guns were taken.
The Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office is assisting the sheriff’s department in looking for the suspects involved. Seven break-ins were identified so far in the last two weeks. Constable Larry Gallardo said he’s aware of at least a half a dozen hits in one day.
According to ranchers, ranch homes and trailers hunters leave on their property are targets. One man said two rifles were taken from a trailer left on his land.
Constable Gallardo said it surprised him the added DPS and Border Patrol in the area haven’t kept burglars away. No suspects have been arrested.
Officers will continue to patrol the area in hopes to catch the thieves.
Safes?
Dogs??
Land mines might be pushing it a bit though…
Dogs & Bear/Punji Traps sound like a good idea to me.
A guy i knew, a looong time ago had people steeling from him. When he’d had enough he amoed up and staked the stash out. when they came again, he shot one of them and the other one got away. He took the one animal he bagged, cut it up in pieces, and buried it in quite a few different places in a valley near his place. He never had any trouble again.
Hmmm. Could the thieves possibly be getting paychecks signed by government alphabet agencies? It’s the only scenario that makes sense when expensive items are being left behind.
