Incredible footage of three cows stranded on patch of grass after New Zealand earthquake destroys land around them

The amazing video comes as hundreds of homes and buildings have been affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake

This video shows the incredible escape of three cows that survived the New Zealand earthquake as the rest of the landscape around them was destroyed.

The animals managed to survive by chance, after the land they were standing on held together.

Last night, a huge 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch, with a second 6.2 occurring in South Island.

Since then, regular smaller aftershocks have continued to hit the area.

This video shows the stranded cows in the middle of the devastating scene.

Two adult cows and what looks like a calf were seen clinging onto the patch of grass

It is not known whether they have yet been rescued, after the video was taken from a helicopter.

Search and rescue teams are still scouring the affected areas.

Two people have been confirmed dead as around 700 people were forced to shelter in evacuation zones last night.

More aftershocks are expected to continue throughout the week.

Emergency officials are warning of a tsunami and have urged people living along the east coast to move to higher ground.

New Zealand earthquake damage will cost BILLIONS, Prime Minister John Key says

The first quake struck 57 miles north-northeast of Christchurch just after midnight local time on Monday and shook much of the country.

A second of 6.2 magnitude struck New Zealand’s South Island at around 2.20am this morning.

3 cows stranded on patch of land after powerful New Zealand earthquake

New Zealand – Three New Zealand cows looked like they could use a little help Monday after an earthquake triggered landslides all around them and left them stranded on a small island of grass.

Video taken by Newshub news service from a helicopter near the small town of Kaikoura shows two adult cattle and a calf stuck on a chunk of land in a paddock that had been ripped apart in Monday’s magnitude-7.8 quake. The patch of grass was surrounded by deep ravines of collapsed earth, trapping the animals where they stood.

It was not immediately clear who owned the cattle or what was being done to help them.

Kaikoura is close to the epicenter of the overnight earthquake, and where one of the two confirmed deaths occurred. The quake was strongly felt to the south in Christchurch but was far less damaging than a smaller 2011 earthquake that devastated the city and killed 185 people.

New Zealand’s 10 million cattle easily outnumber its 4.7 million people.

Fortunately the land they were on stood strong, but left them stranded
The tremor caused widespread landslides across much of New Zealand

Monday’s massive New Zealand earthquake caused major damage to urban areas, however some of the most destructive scenes occurred in the most remote areas of the country.
The enormous 7.8 magnitude earthquake not only tore apart major roadways, but also ripped some of the country’s famed mountain areas to shreds.

So powerful was the quake that it caused one mountainside to separate entirely, leaving a family of cows stranded on a small island of grass.

Incredible video captured the cows standing helplessly on the mountainside atop the tiny island.

The group of three cows fortunately found themselves standing on a sturdy piece of land, saving their beef from the damaged and potentially dangerous earth below.
