Church Said to Offer Refuge to Illegal Crossers

ROMA- A church in Roma is said to offer refuge to illegal crossers. CHANNEL 5 NEWS investigated.

Border patrol agents say they have no jurisdiction on the church or school grounds and smugglers are aware of it. Agents tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS illegal crossers try to skirt the law by hiding on church grounds like Our Lady of Refuge.  

The church is just a short walk from the international boundary line. CHANNEL 5 NEWS tried to make their way from the border to the church. It took one reporter 7 minutes to make the trip.

Chief Patrol Agent Kevin Oaks says, “If we’re aware of any criminal activity that’s going on in any of those locations, we will call the appropriate people. The true believers and a lot of the clergy. They want to help people out and you can understand that. I’m sure for them it’s a look at violating law versus the human side of the thing.”

One woman who goes to Our Lady of Refuge says they would never harbor those who cross illegally. She says they would only give food or water to those who end up at the church.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS was not able to speak to the priest. He was not there when reporters stopped by the church.

“At the end of the day, if the Border Patrol is aware of violations of law within our jurisdiction, we’re going to act respective if it’s a stash house or any other place,” said Oaks.
