PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (WJLA) – Prince George’s County Police Officer Francesco Marlett is accused of knocking a 3-year-old boy unconscious after the child angered him. A Prince George’s County Grand Jury returned an indictment for second-degree child abuse Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement from Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks, Marlett was watching his girlfriend’s child in the home the couple shared while the woman prepared a meal on Dec. 27, 2015. Marlett became angry with the child when he soiled the bed and spanked him so hard he hit his head against the wall and lost consciousness. Marlett performed CPR.
The toddler was taken to Children’s National Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a concussion. He has since recovered.
“There is no excuse for Officer Marlett’s actions,” Alsobrooks said. “No matter what may have happened, striking a defenseless child and causing this type of injury is never acceptable.”
Following a PGPD Internal Affairs Division investigation, Marlett’s police powers were first suspended with pay in December, according to PGPD News. When the indictment came down, he was suspended without pay.
“This incident shows family violence affects people in every profession, in all walks of life,” PGPD Chief Hank Stawinski said Tuesday, “We take these allegations very seriously. The issue of family violence is one we are committed to preventing. Our Internal Affairs Division and our Criminal Investigation Division presented this case to the State’s Attorney’s Office. We will continue partnering with the State’s Attorney on this matter.”
Marlett has been an officer for three years, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District IV.
