WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Charges have been filed against the Wichita police captain accused of shoving a 17-year-old referee at a youth basketball game in Augusta.
According to a statement released by the Augusta city attorney on Monday, Kevin Mears is charged with battery, a Class B misdemeanor and disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor.
City Prosecutor Benjamin D. Winters said the decision was made after reviewing evidence which included ” numerous witness statements as well as video evidence.”
In that video, Mears appears to come out onto the court after a player is hurt during the game. When a referee tries to stop him or tell him to leave, the captain shoves the referee and takes the player off the court.
“I would stress that at this point these charges are merely allegations, and Mr. Mears is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty,” said Winters in his statement.
The Wichita Police Department placed Mears on unpaid administrative leave last week. The department says it will review the incident to determine if department policies were violated, after the completion of the criminal proceedings.
