Adopted Puppy Saves New Owners From Gas Leak

hunterHuffington Post – by Kate Abbey-Lambert

It’s easy to see why Tim and Jill McLarty chose to adopt Hunter: he’s a sweet, calm and curious puppy. They didn’t know, however, that he would end up saving their lives.

The McLartys adopted the Husky mix, now 3 months old, from a Michigan Humane Society off-site adoption center in Sterling Heights, Mich. last month.

“I looked right at him and was like ‘ah, look at the face’ — just fell in love with him,” Tim McLarty said in the video above, created by MHS. “That was it, we were hooked. He was ours.”

Last Wednesday, Jill woke up around midnight to hear Hunter whining, and she couldn’t figure out why. Jill let him outside, but he just sat there and cried, continuing when he came back inside and sat on the kitchen floor. He didn’t stop whining, even after she brought him back inside and into their bedroom.

When she tried to cuddle with him, he bit her and she let go. Hunter then jumped off the bed, out of character for him, opened the door and started running in circles in the hallway. The persistent pup led Jill to the kitchen again, where he sat next to the stove. That’s when she noticed that the burner was on with no flame, leaking gas for the six hours since they made dinner.

Jill and Tim turned off the burner, and eventually went to bed. Hunter fell fast asleep in minutes — apparently, saving your owners can be exhausting for a puppy.

The McLartys’ story is just one more reason why adopting a pet from a shelter might be the best decision you ever make.

“As cliché as it sounds, the life you save may save yours,” said Tim. “He saved our lives. He’s our hero.”

  1. Animals are great. All we got to do is listen and respect them and they will die for ya.Not much for a animal to ask for in return is it 🙂

    1. If this had happened in Australia the letter of the law says the dog has to be put down as it bit a human.

      1. Oh really. 🙁 . That would be a rotton thing to do when that puppy probobly saved their lives.
Heck I would call that puppy a hero myself I sure would

          1. Anyone tried to kill my dog especially after saving my family, well, they would meet their maker.I have really had it with govt. that acts like that and will fight it tooth and nail till i die.

          2. Yes Angel, Mans best friend to be sure any day of the week. and outside of an occasional accident they do not even ask for much in return. People should be more like that eh Angel. 🙂 At least I think so any way.

  2. I believe dogs can be real heroes, but I don’t believe the gas-stove story. I’ve accidentally bumped the stove and turned on the gas – the danger comes when there is no ignition, so the gas fills the room. But when one has already cooked and then left the stove on, the flame is obviously still on. All one does in that case is burn fuel. There is no danger.

I am suspicious of this story and the story about the “gas explosion” in NYC – now principally because the NYT is pushing that angle, and they are not credible.
