More than a decade after the former Indiana oil company of Vice President Mike Pence’s family filed for bankruptcy, taxpayers are bearing the costs of millions of dollars to clean up more than 85 contaminated sites, a report says.

Kiel Bros. Oil Co., once owned by the Pence family, left behind contaminated sites in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois since the company filed for bankruptcy in 2004, the Associated Press reported. Indiana alone has spent at least $21 million on cleanups thus far, or an average of about $500,000 per site, the report said.   Continue reading “Cleanups at Pence family’s failed gas stations costing taxpayers millions: report”

The name of México has several hypotheses that entail the origin, history, and use of the name México, which dates back to 14th century Mesoamerica. The Nahuatl word Mexicomeans place of the Mexica but the ethnonym Mexicatl itself is of unknown etymology.[1] An alternate possibility is that the name may come from the word mexixin, a cress that grew in the swamplands of Lake Texcoco.[citation needed] It was an edible grass that the Aztecs or Mexica survived on as they settled where today lies México City.   Continue reading “Name of Mexico”

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A joint statement by the prime ministers of Poland and Israel was meant to lay to rest a months-long dispute over how to remember Polish behavior during the Holocaust. Instead, the document has re-opened wounds that go back decades.

Prime ministers Benjamin Netanyahu and Mateusz Morawiecki signed and recited the statement in their respective capitals last week after Poland scrapped potential prison terms for anyone claiming the country bore some responsibility for the Holocaust.   Continue reading “Joint Statement On Holocaust Fuels Anger It Was Meant To End”

If by “socialist” we mean a state-supported welfare system to ensure the poor and working poor lead comfortable lives, then yes. Paine supported a social welfare state.

If by “socialist” we mean that wealth is produced by the working classes (in his day the farmers and the mechanics) and that they should reap the benefits of that wealth, then yes as well. (Paine had a labor-theory of value).   Continue reading “Was Thomas Paine a socialist?”

Author Gordon Chang said claims that  is strengthening its  arsenal, rather than scaling it down, is “incontrovertible”.

The gathering at a park gazebo in Huntsville, Ala., was by no means the largest of Saturday’s nationwide protests against President Trump’s “zero tolerance” border policies, though it was memorable for other reasons.

It began around noon, as an Episcopal priest delivered a prayer to about 100 protesters gathered around the gazebo and a man marched back and forth in front of her, shouting “womp, womp!”   Continue reading “Man arrested after shouting ‘womp, womp’ and pulling a gun on immigration protesters”

BOISE, Idaho — A man who had been asked to leave an apartment complex in Boise returned the next day and stabbed children celebrating a 3-year-old girl’s birthday, authorities said Sunday. Six children, ages four to 12, were injured in the attack, along with three adults who rushed to their defense. Boise Police Chief William Bones said the victims are alive but some are gravely injured.

A resident of the apartment complex where the stabbing took place had allowed 30-year-old Timmy Kinner to stay there a short time, but asked him to leave Friday because of his behavior, Bones said. Kinner returned Saturday, when the girl was having her party a few doors down from where he had stayed, according to police.    Continue reading “Idaho mass stabbing: Suspect accused of targeting 3-year-old’s birthday party”

A new poll confirms that a significant number of Americans have the health of the Union on their mind.

A national survey conducted by Rasmussen Reports indicates that a full 31% of American voters believe the U.S. “will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years,” while 59% of voters see the prospect of a nation-dividing conflict unlikely. Add in the (I assume) 10% of voters who had no opinion on the matter and that’s 69% of voters who aren’t worried — which is, you know, nice. I’m a glass half full kind of guy.   Continue reading “Nearly A Third Of Americans Believe A Second Civil War Is On The Horizon”
