CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – New federal school food regulations promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama are becoming a massive headache for many schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.

And many, like Missouri’s Notre Dame Regional and Saxony Lutheran high schools, are taking matters into their own hands.

Those schools and numerous others across the country are ditching the federal regulations and the funding that comes with them to save their cafeteria programs, which have experienced a nose-dive in sales and skyrocketing waste since the new rules were implemented in 2012.   Continue reading “Missouri, Alabama schools drop Michelle O’s lunch program”

Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he may recommend ground forces in the future. The White House is seeking to gloss over the rift between the president and his top general, but it is clear that just below the waterline Obama is not on the same page as the commanders who will be leading the new fight. U.S. military officials and members of Congress have complained privately for weeks that Obama appears unwilling to commit the resources necessary to achieve his aim of defeating ISIS. Taiwan displayed how its fighter jets and early-warning aircraft could land, refuel and take off on a closed motorway yesterday in a scenario simulating a mainland attack that wiped out the island’s air force bases.

The exercise, the first of its kind since 2011, was a reminder of lingering mainland hostilities towards the island despite warming ties between the two rivals.

“The scenario of the drill was that the air bases were severely damaged after intensive bombings of ballistic and cruise missiles by the Chinese communists,” Major General Hung Kuang-min said.    Continue reading “Taiwanese fighter jets land on highway in ‘China attack’ war games”

DARPA continues to develop an array of robots designed for the battlefield. Naturally, one of their slated applications is to chase human prey.

In February, 2011, DARPA first announced its next-generation robot called the Cheetah; it was heralded as the world’s fastest legged robot. In fact, its speed of 28.3 mph was faster than the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. However, its speed was reached in a laboratory setting, tethered on a treadmill for stability.   Continue reading “DARPA’s Cheetah Bot Is Off The Leash”

Gold Core – by Mark O’Byrne

Trade statistics for the month of August have just been released in India, showing a huge surge in gold imports compared to August of 2013. The value of gold officially imported into India in August totalled $2.04 billion, which was nearly three times more than the August 2013 figure of $739 million.

Although the Indian trade deficit fell to $10.84 billion in August from $12.2 billion in July on the back of a lower oil price and a drop in the value of oil imports from $14.3 billion to $12.8 billion, the deficit would have been lower were it not for the surge in the value of gold imports.   Continue reading “Gold Demand In India Triples As China Launches Global Gold Bourse This Thursday”
