When the 19th copy of Enzo Ferrari’s 250 GTO Berlinetta left Maranello in 1962, it was just another race car, one that had a hard life ahead of wrecks and in one instance a driver’s death. Yet today, the GTO was poised to become the most expensive car ever sold, the new high mark in a global demand for classic cars.
Instead, Bonhams’ auctioneer Roberts Brooks brought the hammer down at $34.65 million — and with the 10 percent buyer’s premium, the final price of $38.115 million set a new record for vehicle auctions, but was well short of the record for a private vehicle sale. A French photographer snapped these astonishing pictures of passenger planes appearing as though they are heading to some unusual locations… the sun and the moon.
The shots of a Boeing Dreamliner were captured by Sebastien Lebrigand, 39, from the back garden in his home in Crepy-en-Valois, near Paris.
The images give the illusion that the planes are flying around the sun or about to land on the moon’s surface. Continue reading “Stunning photos capture passenger planes looking as though they are flying to the moon and circling the sun”

Law enforcement agencies are turning to the Department of Defense, more and more, for their tactical policing needs, requesting such items as Mine Resistant Ambush Protection (MRAP) vehicles, surplus Humvees, rifles, and other assorted military-grade hardware. While some can be used in special operations, such as protecting officers from active shooters, or gaining entry into heavily fortified buildings, the sheer audacity of one Oklahoma Sheriff goes far beyond this. For the past 15 years I’ve worked as a professional photojournalist, inspired by the camera’s ability to connect human beings, document news, and capture beauty. But there is a darker side to how photography is used in our world today. Cameras are increasingly deployed for surveillance, spying, or targeting. I often wonder whether these uses have already eclipsed traditional ones, such as portraiture and fine art. Are we at a point in the evolution of photography where the medium has become weaponized? In 2011, according to data I collected, police officers in the United States shot 1,146 people, killing 607. Between January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2012 I used the Internet to compile a national database of police involved shootings. The term “police involved shooting” pertains to law enforcement officers who, in the line of duty, discharge their guns. When journalists and police administrators use the term, they include the shooting of animals and shots that miss their targets. My case files only include instances in which a person is either killed or wounded by police gunfire. My data also includes off-duty officers who discharged their weapons in law enforcement situations. They don’t include, for example, officers using their firearms to resolve personal disputes.
