Don McLean – The meaning of American Pie

Uploaded on Feb 15, 2007 by lonestarsound

This is a revision to previously posted videos. I was fortunate enough to go to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake IA and speak firsthand with many who were there including Tommy Allsup who flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. This version corrects some factual errors and includes new footage from the SURF

  1. aw man Millard. you pulled my heartstrings with this one. Never saw this particular video. Great find brother. Those days were the best ever. I lived them. Thanks for taking me back.

    1. Yes, it did bring back some good memories for me but that’s all they are, good memories. It would be hard to imagine anything coming out of the music world today that could even come close to identifying with a “generation lost in space”.

  2. I always wondered about the lyrics to American Pie. After watching this video I can understand McLean’s presumed intent… even though he will deny it.

Even though I was only 4-years-old at the time of Buddy Holly’s demise, it will always be seen as a great loss. Buddy Holly’s end is sort of like the untimely death of Jim Croce, who did die tragically during my era — makes you wonder what music they would have written if they weren’t cut-down in the prime of their youth.
