Harry Reid Doesn’t Like Reporters Poking Into His Family Affairs

The Lonely Conservative

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been caught paying over $30,000 for jewelry from his granddaughter’s company out of campaign funds. He says the purchases were gifts for supporters, but as Jon Ralston pointed out, “The FEC wants to know more about the gifts purchased with campaign funds. The rules only allow officials to give gifts of nominal value. It would take quite a number of nominal gifts to add up to $17,000. Either way, the optics here are just horrific.” The average price for items from his granddaughter’s company is $70, which seems to be a little bit more than “nominal.”

As it turns out, the $17,000 number wasn’t quite accurate. And Harry Reid doesn’t like reporters poking around into his family affairs.

After additional reporting found that Harry Reid’s campaign paid his granddaughter’s company approximately $31,000 for jewelry, the Senate majority leader said he will repay the full sum, but he pushed back against journalists probing into his family’s affairs.

On Wednesday, Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston discovered that Reid’s campaign had paid out an additional $14,000 to Ryan Elisabeth Reid’s jewelry company for “holiday gifts” for staff and campaign donors. Originally, the total was thought to be approximately $17,000. […]

Reid also bristled at what he labeled “negative, unwanted attention” on his granddaughter. “At this point, I only wish that my granddaughter be spared from further attacks, harassing visits and phone calls, and other kinds of unwanted attention.”  (Read More)

Um, really? If he hadn’t used campaign funds to support his granddaughter’s business nobody would be paying her any attention, negative or otherwise.

Also notable is that the payments to Ryan Elizabeth Reid were made out to Ryan Elizabeth. It’s almost like he had something to hide by omitting her last name. And although he is paying back his campaign he still hasn’t explained the payments to the FEC. But I’m sure the main stream media will give him a pass. It’s not like they’re talking about his shady land dealsillegal gifts to hotel workers, or donations from straw donorsthat landed his buddy in jail. Certainly they wouldn’t want to upset him by prying into his family business.
