Homeless encampment set to close Tuesday

NBC 5 News – by Jennifer Sheahen

A Burlington homeless encampment is set to be cleared Tuesday.

Late last month, people living at the Sears Lane homeless encampment were served with an eviction notice.

When NBC5 first spoke to encampment resident Nicholas Walls, he said the wooded area was where police told them they could go.

“The cops told me I could come here, Burlington police. I asked them specifically, me and my wife asked them, where could we go to camp,” Walls said.

Now, the group living on the land has less than 24 hours to leave.

Kevin Pound, executive director of the homeless shelter Anew Place, says even if those in the encampment tried finding a place to stay overnight, it would be tough.

“They are usually in a pretty desperate situation. They are like, ‘Hey do you have a bed for me to stay in?’ and we have to tell them that they are at the end of a 12-person wait list. Often the next question is, ‘So when can I expect a bed to open?’ That could be three days or three weeks. Usually their need is more urgent than that,” Pound said.

Walls and his wife say they heard rumors the eviction would be moved to Nov. 1. That would have been a positive thing for the two, because after Wall’s brother saw news coverage about the encampment they say he stepped up to help them move into an apartment in Barre on Nov. 4.

Nov. 1 is also when the winter shelter opens which adds an additional 27 beds in Burlington.

    1. Counting what they DON’T tell us about, I’d say probably enough to feed every American (NOT the damn illegals!) for a year or more, Mary.
