How to chop wood without messing around

I don’t know if the axe he’s using is all that special, but he sure makes efficient (German) use of it.
On balance it’s probably the elastic band that is key here.

    1. That is a neat setup,a little smaller wood sizes then I would personally want but damn, going to research this a bit as I split a lot of wood, cool video.

    1. Deb,that is a bad ass stove, really is a stove!I have a larger old school Lopi with glassed door, like the big pieces for end of the night slow/keep the heat burns. The next plan is a stone wall around it to hold in heat or perhaps weld a few supports for soapstone for same affect.I will say the thing is a dragon and if necc. will easily burn todays split wood, avoid unless a emergency as not getting full bang for buck from wood. How is your unit for cooking once fired up,does it stay at a fairly stable temperature?

      1. Hey James,

I’ve had this stove for 10 years now. It heats beautifully! The cook top is great, the warming unit above the cooking surface is nice for keeping food warm, and even drying gloves!

I have used the oven, but only a few times. We lost power a couple of years back for 3 days, and I baked a lasagna in it, and it took about 1 hour, same as if I used my electric oven. I don’t think I would bake a cake in it though, but it’s great for warming casseroles and I even cooked a batch of homemade baked beans. The temp stays fairly stable as long as the vents are adjusted properly, which takes a little time getting use to.

A stone or soapstone jacket lining your stove would certainly be helpful, I have stone in my stoves and it does help to hold the heat without going through the wood too quickly.

    1. Good idea Paul, was figuring how to make his setup, seems adjustable but have a old tire in my garage, will give it a shot!

        1. Paul, will give it a shot tomm. and post, unless I hit tire and splitting maul comes back and conks me in the head!I looked closer at the wood guys setup, chain, bungee,a few horse clips, would be nice as then adjustable. My tire is a 15″ and have a lot of 24″ up rounds still to split, the frozen temps has it open like a book, tis next years wood unless a total breakdown ect.,have a few that tire will fit,see what happens.

          1. great looking forward to seeing how it works for you. the one i saw was a pretty big tire. he had several pieces in the middle, and was able to split them all with having to reposition on every other swing.

  1. Pretty cool ,I had a boy (my son Josh)on the wrestling team who I convinced instead of pumping weights put that energy to a beneficial task of splitting firewood ( I used to burn 10- 15 cords a season) after a week or so you could really see the results in his mat performance he became a wood splitting ,hauling, stacking machine and though he never took first in the state championship tourney he went 3 yrs in a row.

      1. I hesitate in responding to you james, look at the insanity it started last time LOL He went for the Wrestling team .

  2. Whoaaa! That’s awesome. I’ve been heating my home with wood for years and I’ve never seen that set up before. Great trick!!

  3. Paul, for now passing on tire trick, here is why, ground unfroze and do not have a stump big enuff that tire doesn’t slide around a bit,saw potential injury and said screw that !.I if can hit a store when low on holiday shoppers going to pt together the chain/waterclip/bungee unit and try it out.I would like if can find strong enuff dog pinch collar material as would hold onto log even better ,any interested bookmark this article and will hit it ina week or so with results and formula if worked, still going to try tire setup when have appropriate stump and if works will make stump designated for tire, perhaps a few screws thru tire into stump would help but do not have the carry ability of that woodsman’s cool unit, happy wood splitting all!

    1. James, you might try those black rubber( can I say black) bungee straps truckers use to secure their loads ,they come in all different lengths and are fairly cheap.Nylon tie downs would probably work as well.
      Steve

      1. Steve, exactly what I was thinking, have some floating about in my controlled chaos of goods! The thing I really want if it would work is the dog pinch collar chain, wondering if I can get a long piece or perhaps bolt a few together, will when done and tried post results, enjoy your wood folks! As weather warmed up nicely time for a few oil changes as work slow till after the holidays.
