A smuggler is behind bars after he assaulted a game warden near the Rio Grande.
It happened Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m. just south of McAllen.
The warden was patrolling the river front in a pick-up truck when he spotted a group of unauthorized immigrants that had just crossed the river when he attempted to stop them, Texas Parks & Wildlife Major Malcolm Wilkes told Action 4 News.
Wilkes said the smuggler with the group resisted arrest and began hitting the warden as he tried to make his way back to Mexico.
The warden was able to arrest the smuggler who was later transported to the Hidalgo County Jail.
The warden was not seriously injured and is back on patrol today.
