WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The woman shot Wednesday by incoming Winston-Salem Police Chief Barry Rountree says he did not immediately come to help her after she was shot.
“He did not come to me. He backed away,” says Tamara Whitt after being released from the hospital. “He just backed up and I saw the cell phone come out … he walked across the street over there by that car over there and he was on his phone … and I told the SBI he did not come to me.”
Investigators say Rountree shot Whitt in the leg after responding to a dangerous weapon call at 124 North Jackson Ave. around 1:30 p.m, after a 911 caller reported a man was standing on the porch with a large gun pointed at another person.
Rountree and Officer Mohammed Khan, responded to the scene stationing themselves behind Khan’s vehicle.
Whitt, who lives nearby, says her boxer dog “Lebrone” heard the officers and went down the driveway as she followed. In a Winston-Salem Police Dept. news release investigators say the dog ran toward Rountree and Khan, acting in an “aggressive manner.” Rountree attempted to shoot the dog, but his bullet hit the pavement and struck Whitt.
“The dog was closer to me than the officer, that’s where this whole thing is just out of hand,” said Whitt who questions why Rountree fired his gun while she was near the dog. “I wasn’t expecting the gun to be fired because I was right there.” Whitt also says her dog is “very passive” and “not aggressive.”
According to police, the round struck the pavement ricocheted and bullet fragments struck Whitt. Whitt says the entire 40 caliber bullet is inside her left thigh and doctors say it’s too dangerous to remove.
Whitt says officer Khan immediately radioed for help and came to her aid, but it wasn’t until after Rountree finished his phone call that he walked over to ask if she was ok.
“I just hope that the SBI does a good investigation and really sees if he really deserve to be our police [chief] because I honestly thought that was a rookie mistake.”
Lebrone – the family dog, is ok and in the custody of Forsyth County Animal Control.
The SBI is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
Assistant Chief Rountree has been placed on administrative duty, while an investigation is conducted.

Usual thing, bucket, brush and a can of whitewash to follow.
Why are police operating shoot to kill policies with dogs? Aren’t dogs legal property in the US and to do so constitutes a crime and an assault, I am sure there is something in the constitution that forbids the destruction or withholding of property.
Or are American police officers so timid that a non threatening dog made them widdle themselves and panic… big big he-men behind guns aren’t they?
Dogs are sentinels for their owners. there is (i personally believe)an unwritten mandate that was sent down from the elites in the u.n/nato post 9/11/2001 to start ramping up use of force continuum/deadly force against property-owners and their pets. this is a conditioning i believe to be used to usher in “respect” (term used very loosely) for the po-lice state-fascism. it is to instill unwaivering fear into the populace to fear the po-lice state, and its guard for the nwo-fascism agenda. payback’s a bitch/ all i can say at this point.
This situation really angers me. why is it “ok” for the po-lice to shoot anyone’s dog, yet if a k-9 po-lice dog is injured/killed then that someone who has done that to the dog is charged with capital murder and or aggravated assault against a po-lice officer. this is the true definition of hypocrisy. but it also shows everyone the true blue line: its “us against them” philosophy. phukk ’em all. the nwo isn’t coming/ITS ALREADY HERE.
Ain’t that a corker? He managed to get the dog AND the owner with a single shot.
He sounds more like LAPD or NYPD material to me.
He should be called Barry “he’s behind you woooooo” Rountree and be picked as the ultimate bad guy in the next Lassie remake…
Its grim here in the UK, so I do feel for you, police can kill with impunity, politicians can lie and steal with impunity, welfare plundered by corporations, industry run into the ground and outsourced and the only thing to look forward to is to try and remain a law abiding citizen when hundreds of new crimes appear every year on top of the 3,500 wholly new crimes brought in by Tony Blair.
We’ve lost our rights to a fair trial and defence, we can no longer protest unless its “approved” by the police and government, the right to strike is all but gone and the protected rights of employees are a hollow nothing too.
Welcome to the west, work yourself into the ground, comply or die and don’t dare become sick or disabled or if you do just die quietly and conveniently in a corner out of the way.
A dangerous place to live in and a dangerous place to go to; tht’s what America has been turned into.
In any real job a stupid mistake like that followed up by an immediate move to cover his own ass instead of trying to assist would result in getting fired. But we all know taxfeeders are held to lower standards. If there hadn’t been non-cop witnesses he probable would have finished her off just to avoid further problems, standard cop procedure.
What is it with these cops shooting peoples dogs? It’s absolutely disgraceful. They were there to deal with a “dangerous weapon call” and got sidetracked by an innocent bystanders dog and ended up shooting the bystander. They’re not fit to serve in their jobs. The incoming chief of police of all people. What an idiot! They need to stop sending these incompetent fools to racist, apartheid israel for training. Americans are the new Gazans.
Hey All,
One bullet kept clean and in their shirt pocket would protect us all from these “baney Fife’s” ,Are all cops just cowardly lil s#$ts (rhetorical alert) they all must sleep with their lites on to keep from getting the “drizzles”
