Legislation that would empower states to tax online purchases cleared a key hurdle in the Senate on Monday after winning an enthusiastic endorsement from President Obama.
Senators advanced the bill in 74-20 procedural vote on Monday evening, just one vote short of the backing it received in a test vote last month. Twenty-six Republicans joined Democrats in moving forward with the bill.
The Senate will now begin debate on amendments. The chamber is expected to hold the decisive vote on the bill — known as the Marketplace Fairness Act — later this week.
Major retailers are putting all their lobbying muscle behind the legislation, arguing it would close an unfair loophole that benefits online merchants over brick-and-mortar stores. The National Retail Federation, which represents chains such as Macy’s, and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), which counts Target and others among its membership, announced it would score lawmakers’ votes.
The White House gave the bill a ringing endorsement on Monday.

And just WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE saying that it would score votes? YOU ARE A CORPORATION, NOT A PERSON!! YOU HAVE NO SAY OR POWER IN VOTING!! A PERSON VOTES, NOT A CORPORATION! Who are you to speak for the people? F**K OFF!!!
More proof of the corporations in control of the Corporate States of America.
Big corporations will just add a little specialized software to their online ordering system to collect the tax. For my small business, it was such a nightmare collecting taxes for ONE state (California) that I moved out of the state. Last year, CA started sending me harassing letters in a crude attempt to scare me into collecting taxes for them even though I’m not legally required to, so I simply stopped selling anything into CA. If this sales tax collecting for all 50 states goes through, it will be the same old nightmare X 50, and I will simply go out of business. This is exactly what the large corporations intended…….. as John D. Rockefeller said, “competition is a sin.” This is the same reason they attack little girls with lemonade stands, or gardeners growing some of their own food.
What these large retailers don’t realize is that if they “level the playing field” with online sellers, driving many of them out of business, it isn’t going to send my business to Macy’s or anyone else — I simply won’t buy. And If I don’t buy, I don’t have to earn, and I don’t have to pay taxes on what I don’t have to earn. So maybe Obama should re-think their strategy.
Farewell, America, it was nice knowing ya!
“President Barack Obama supports the bill. His administration says it would help restore needed funding for education, police and firefighters, roads and bridges and health care.”
The first sentence tells me enough…if that idiot supports it it’s gotta be
(education, police and firefighters, roads and bridges and health care)
Bullshit….more money for bailouts and Israel.
The country won’t see a dime.
“Marketplace Fairness Act”… my ass. This has nothing to do with being fair or not fair on purchases being made and taxed or not taxed and everything to do with the GOVT not being able to control their spending habits like a drunk on steroids… get a grip already and go to rehab and if you cannot be rehabilitated, then please, do the right thing and resign from office.
