Louisiana Methane Leak in New Madrid Complex, Emergency Evacs

Before It’s News – by Deborah Dupre

Methane gas is spewing near Louisiana’s coast as workers battle to kill an out-of-control well. Air-lifted evacuations of all non-essential personnel have been conducted and Coast Guard HU-25 crews are responding. The oil rig and platform are in the Gulf Of Mexico area connected to the New Madrid Falt Complex.

The operator, EnVen, reported it was drilling from its jack-up rig called the Rowan Louisiana when the well began flowing gas, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. (BSEE)

Essential personnel are battling to kill the out-of-control well, according to the BSEE.

The out-of-control Rowan Louisiana rig is in Vermillion Block 356, near Louisiana’s coast and the BP-wrecked Macondo Prospect, around 108 miles southwest of Lafayette.

Officials say no injuries or pollution have been reported.

The Coast Guard reported by midday Friday that  the well leak has been cut in half.

The rig was drilling 256 feet down.

EnVen Energy Ventures, LLC, an oil and gas exploration and development services company, a subsidiary of Palm Energy Partners, LLC, is operating the rig.

“The Captioned well has been directionally drilled to an objective on SM 166 from the VR 356 A Platform. Logging while drilling tools indicated the presence of two gas zones at 1340 feet [measured depth] MD and 1,830 feet MD, both of which were anticipated in the well construction plan which was approved,” stated EnVen’s Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Garrett, to Rigzone.

“At 2,217 feet MD, a routine wiper trip was conducted, pulling the drill string back up inside the 13-3/8-inch casing with the bit at 1,140 feet MD (77 feet inside the 13-3/8”). With bit inside casing, a routine circulation was commencing when the well began to flow.”

The well was reportedly put on a diverter system for formation fluids to vent overboard while working to get the well killed.

“The well continues to flow through the diverter system while efforts kill the well continue.”

BSEE added that the adjacent platform was producing oil and gas and was shut-in.

The Coast Guard sent an HU-25 Falcon crew from Corpus Christi to assess the scene, and noted that it has not yet received a request for assistance from anyone in the Gulf.

“All nonessential personnel were evacuated from the rig. Thus far, there have been no personnel incidents or accidents and no pollution as the flow is natural gas/water/sand,” Garrett added.

BSEE will investigate the incident, it stated in a press release.

The rig has been drilling into the fault area that intersectsth the infamous and extremely dangerous New Madrid complex.

  1. This is wreckless and criminal, with forethought of criminal agenda clearly outlined by their behavior here is why- in 1991 texaco explored the mc252 canyon area and drilled an exploratory well. that well was very unstable as they found the intersection of the new madrid fault where it ran thru a salt dome complex. texaco abandoned the well and said the subography was too unstable to found a well there. later in 1999 texaco came back to the area and………………..
drilled the rigel well. it too hit the salt dome and fault line and was shut in and abandoned. i think this exploration was done to probe a false flag by rupturing the mc252 reservoior @ 18000 feet and over 10000psi into the new madrid fault line. this exact scenario occurred when the bp/transocean 252 wells a,b.c were drilled in april of 2010. the second well hit the reservior and blew out the rig as we all know. later on the bayou corne salt dome started bubbling with methane and oil which had the exact signature of what is spewing from the mc252 well(well from hell). this is a deliberate act to attempt to speed up the activation of the new madrid fault. these people running the drill rig need to be hanged!.

  2. I know people hate the Oil Companies, and I agree I think they want to do something with the Madrid. But you have to understand something, I was born and raised in South Louisiana, Working in the Oil Field is a way of Life. My dad was in the oil field, all of my uncles are in the oil field, damn near everybody in my neighborhood and all neighborhoods in Lafayette work for the oil field in one way or another. We are called Hub City, because we are the hub for the oil field. These wells blow all the time, offshore and onshore. I work in the oil field for on shore projects, if the people of South Louisiana did not have this we would all starve to death. You have to understand it is a way of life for people down here and other parts of the country, just as the fishing industry, coal industry, etc.

    1. re: Missy-
Perhaps some clarification is needed. i dont mean collectively that everyone in the petrol and gas industries are demented…….but the ones who drilled the bp/macondo well in 2010 and these people who drilled in the same area of instability are wreckless. the whole of plat 252 is a salt dome. they drilled the 252 well on the periphery of the salt dome/madrid fault line and there was no substructure to hold the well casing in place. all the other wells and drill rigs are not doing this, but they were wreckless on the macondo252 as well as this gas well. no ill will was intended toward you or your kin.

      1. Thank you, I know BP is bad, my brother in law is an engineer for them, he okayed the corexit 9. Chesapeake is bad, as Shell, Exxon, Chevron, etc. But they provide work. We don’t work offshore, I just run Title for inland projects, I research records in the courthouse and let them know who the landowner is, it is up to the landowner if they want to lease, nobody can make them.

  3. 100 million people unemployed, millions living in tent cities and on the streets. We should all walk away from the places where we can survive and commit ourselves to starving to death.
Don’t go anywhere Missy. Don’t make it easy for that Mexican and that Chinaman to take your place.
BP is a British corporation. If the locals don’t want to work on the platforms, they just ship in the labor through the VISA programs.
To suggest somebody should just walk away from their lives in some futile attempt to control the corporations, when you know that they only way they will be removed is by force, is an asinine assertion.
Better look after yourself and get ready as an individual and quit looking for somebody else to solve these problems for you.

    1. Henry I am not going anywhere! As long as they hire me to do title work and as long as there is work, I will be working! You are right if Americans don’t do the work somebody else will. The oil field is very up and down. I know a lot of people that are out of work right now, my Mom is one, and she has almost 40 years of experience!! My sister is working right now, but she was out of work for a year. We work when we can, we know these companies do not care about us, but we have to eat!!!
