Ram needed for broadcast computers

We are looking for more ram for our broadcast computers.  Our main broadcast computer is a Dell Optiplex 745.  Our Ustream broadcast computer is a Dell Optiplex GX620.

The ram needed for the Dell Optiplex 745 is DDR2 PC2-6400 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.8V 256Meg x 64.  There are four slots for the memory and apparently the memory cards need to match to work properly. Right now it is running on 2 gigs and is a little slow.  We would like to up the ram to 8 gigs, which is the maximum amount the computer can take, so that would be 4 cards of 2 gigs each.  Although 4 cards of 1 gig each for a total of 4 gigs would be a definite improvement.

The ram needed for the Dell Optiplex GX620 is  DDR2 PC2-5300 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.8V 256Meg x 64.  There are only two slots for the memory in this computer and 4 gigs is the maximum that it can take, so 2 cards of 2 gigs each would be great.

If anyone has any extra memory cards sitting around gathering dust that you would like to get rid of, we would be very grateful if you would send them to us.

  1. everything i got is 1G.

i got 5 cards of Samsung 1GB 1Rx8 PC2-6400U-666-12-ZZ memory here.. i don’t even know if they work or not being they are salvaged..

i also have a hand full of the 5300U but as i said i have nothing over 1GB so it wouldn’t do too much for the 2 slot PC…

  2. if ya need i could give a tweak to speed up the menu system that i do on all the computers i have..

this is a Windows XP tweak.. this is also a registry tweak, so don’t change any thing else least you brick your OS.. id recommend doing a restore point/registry backup b4 doing any changes..

but if your feeling brave go to start/run and type in “regedit” without quotes and hit enter..

    find “HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop…

find the item in the list in window that says “MenuShowDelay” by default this is set to 400.. i set mine on 0 delay but that might be too fast for some people as this takes all the delay out of the menu systems including the start menu.. 100 or 50 would probably be a good setting…

reboot to let settings take effect..

there is a few other tweaks i do also that help with the booting and shutdown processes but well just stick with the menu system for the time being..

id also suggest turning off all the unnecessary things that run in the background and eat up memory.. the laptop computer im on right now only has 512MB of memory but boots in less than 1min and shuts down in seconds.. i do have the OS stripped of everything that it does not need to run..

to see what is running in the background you can Ctrl/Alt/Delete to bring up task manager or right click on the task bar at bottom of screen and chose the task manager and click on Processes..
