Report: NJ Gov. Proposes 2,400% Fee Hike on Handgun Permits

CNS News – by Natalia Mittelstadt

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy reportedly is proposing major hikes in gun-permit and licensing fees that include, for instance, a 2,400% increase in the permit fee for a handgun, from $2 to $50, reported NJ.com.

Such fees have not been raised since the 1960s in New Jersey and the governor’s plan has not been formally introduced in the State Legislature, said NJ.Com.

However, details obtained by NJ Advance Media show that permits for handguns would rise from $2 to $50, a 2,400% increase. Gun ID card fees would rise from $5 to $100; handgun-carry permits go up from $50 to $500; and manufacturer licenses rise from $150 to $1,500.

On June 13, Gov. Murphy said, “It’s hard to believe it’s actually cheaper to get a permit to purchase a handgun, which is $2, than it is to get a dog license in practically any town in our state.”  Since taking office five months ago, the Garden State governor has passed six gun-control laws.

Scott Bach, who heads the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs, said the proposal would “punish law-abiding gun owners for the acts of criminals and madmen,” reported NJ.com.

Bach also said the governor’s plan would not “survive a court challenge.”
