The GuardianRussia is sending a reconnaissance ship to the eastern Mediterranean as the US prepares for a possible military strike in Syria, it was reported on Monday.
The Priazovye left Russia’s naval base in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Sevastopol late on Sunday on a mission “to gather current information in the area of the escalating conflict”, said an unidentified military source quoted by the Interfax news agency. The defence ministry declined to comment.
Barack Obama said on Saturday he would seek congressional authorisation for punitive military action against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad after what the US says was a sarin gas attack that killed more than 1,400 people.
Russia says the US has not proved its case and that it believes the attack was staged by rebels to provoke intervention in the civil war.
Russia is one of Assad’s biggest arms suppliers and has a naval maintenance facility in the Syrian port of Tartous. Moscow opposes any military intervention in Syria and has shielded Damascus from pressure at the UN security council.
Interfax said the Priazovye would be operating separately from a navy unit permanently stationed in the Mediterranean in a deployment that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said is needed to protect national security interests.
The defence ministry said last week that new warships would be sent to the Mediterranean to replace others in a long-planned rotation of ships based there.

What is needed now is an open revolt in the ranks of the military. The troops must refuse to take part in an illegal war. Attacking a sovereign nation that the U.S. is not at war with is a CRIME. Who wants the death of innocent citizens of another nation on their conscience?
And, just where does the President get the authority to decide to “punish” the leader of another nation. Nowhere is that authorized in the Constitution.
One of my greatest fears is that all of this is going to cause America to implode. I’m afraid that the day will come soon when martial law will be imposed on us all. In the event that should happen I would like to think that if some officer ordered some soldier to open fire and shoot fellow Americans who could be his family, his friends, his neighbors or any innocent citizen that that soldier would turn that gun around and blow that officer’s God Damned head clean off.
this troop revolt began happening after the Tet Offensive in 1968 in Vietnam…it was called fragging……officers were shot or hit with hand grenades when they gave the idiot orders of certain death, sometimes whole companies refused orders…the army covered it up as best they could…there are known to be over 1000 incidents of such then its said the army stopped counting….
i went through the second Tet Offensive, in 1969……Long Bein, was the name of my station post…over 50thousand GI’s on the post, paved streets, a large swimming pool, bars with real slot machines which dumped out coins for winning, no paper tickets…that kind of describes the place…a night attack was made on this heavily fortified army post for the second tet offensive…something like 175 vietnamese were killed…they could’nt get through the wire perimiter..oh a few might have….army helicopter gun ships firing tracer rounds bounced bullets up into the air off the paved streets…damdent thing I have ever seen…….our company barber (vietnamese) was found hanging on the wire, when daylight arrived…thats sort of a way of life there also at that time…you could hot tell who was who with the vietnamese….nationals.
each war is a bit different…Nam was an actual shoot um up war compared to iraq and afghanistan….my understanding there, most damage is done by road side bombs…….and in Nam I never heard of one such thing….

I remember the fragging stories. I was off the coast on a carrier in 67, 69 and 70. My brother was also in country Army, Dec. 69 till Nov 70. Maybe you guys were near each other.
I just hope that no soldier would ever shoot a fellow American to support this corrupt government.

Hi James…. what I meant by fragging…….is the enlisted men, hardened by combat, would when given goofy orders by some gung ho 1st or 2nd Leuy…who was just coming in country and knew nothing of the real war there. would do the shooting……..they themselves were not being shot…..idiot young officers who refused to consider their own troops…stood a risk of not gong home…….thats what i mean. I did not personally witness that….
Speaking of US ships off shore……..I was drafted into the US Military Police….and our company had 9 river patrol boats which escorted, guarded the ammo barges which would go out to sea, off load the ammo and then travel back up the Saigon River….I was stationed real close to Saigon……
We also had seven ambush squads each with seven men on a squad which went out and guarded a 25 square mile area around the post……….I haven’t thought of this in a long time. One night while on patrol, we were sleeping except the guy with the radio, to our co command was to remain awake…I woke up and every last one of us was asleep…I never slept again after that at night….I always remained alert. I refused to be surprised by the Viet Cong….you really had to look after yourself………same in every war…
