SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Police Department collected more than 700 guns during a buyback in January, and now city officials have a plan for what to do with them.

Mayor Mike McGinn is expected to announce Tuesday that they’ll be melted into bricks carrying messages of peace, and the bricks will be placed around the city.

The buyback program was announced a month after last December’s elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., by city leaders sick of hearing about gun violence.

Private sponsors including contributed tens of thousands of dollars so that people could anonymously turn in their weapons for shopping cards worth up to $200.

Some 716 guns were turned in. With support from the charitable foundation of famed glass artist Dale Chihuly, they’ll be turned into bricks.

The mayor plans to visit public schools around the city to hear from students about how gun violence affects them, and their messages of peace will be represented on the bricks.

  1. lets hope that the ladies being forcebly raped can read them in the dark so as to reassure them that they are safe and maybe even those being mugged or stabbed for a few dollars. Maybe on some of them they can put messages on them like “this was your stolen gun”.

  2. They have money to buy these weapons They have money to pay someone to melt them into bricks They have money to pay another person to scribe a message in the bricks, . Where did they get all this money? But, they have no money for the homeless. No money for struggling families. No money to pay their debts. No money to give BACK to the taxpayers. What are the local taxpayers and citizens saying about this?

  3. “When the Cambrian measures were forming, they promised perpetual peace. They swore if we gave them our weapons, the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed they sold us, and delivered us bound to our foes, And The Gods Of The Copybook Headings, said “Stick to the devil you know.”

  4. Hopefully some of those ‘bricks’ will get tossed through the windshields of Seattle PD.

While they’re driving at high speeds.
