Gives you some idea about what smoke we are getting:
… yup, it’s the Kalmiopsis again;~(((
US National Weather Service Medford Oregon
This is a satellite image (NASA’s Aqua Polar orbiting satellite) from yesterday afternoon’s smoke. Given a similar wind pattern today, the smoke coverage is similar and should be this afternoon too. This image highlights nicely the sources of smoke (red dots though not all fires were picked up by satellite, so not all are dotted) and where the clear areas are in the forecast area. You can see the east to northeast winds near the coast and the northerly winds the further inland you go. Sorry about the less-than-ideal-labeling, but this was the best smoke image, so we thought we’d share. #orwx #cawx

Had no idea how bad the burning smoke was coming from Kalmiopsis until I checked the Medford NWS page on FB…I dislike summertime for this very reason.
In 1987 visited Crater Lake and Umpqua forest and climbed some mountain (think Hood, but don’t remember exactly), in August. Husband went to Oregon State (forestry, but never got degree), and yes, summer does appear to be the northwest’s dry season (it’s the opposite in far west Texas, it is our rainy season, while spring is our fire season). Just don’t let smoke get into your lungs! Take care.
“…I dislike summertime for this very reason…..”
Yeah, I guess wildfires are a fairly regular seasonal occurrence there.
I wish you favorable winds and fresh air to breath, but I hear the NAPA valley was also destroyed this summer. We’ve been getting excellent wines from California lately, and now this. Can’t get a break in this world.
